Graduates FAQs

Role and application process

No. We can only accept one application from you so it’s best to make sure you apply for the one you are really interested in. If the role that you apply for fills, we’ll get in touch with you to discuss alternatives where we can – leave that with us. In some cases there may not be roles to go to therefore we would put your application on hold and be back in touch if anything changes.

Our application form is very quick to complete - we don’t ask any difficult questions so provided you can tell us who you are, where you studied and a few other things, it shouldn’t take you very long at all.

We’ll ask you to confirm a few details about the eligibility requirements for the role and which locations you’d like to work in, as well as some of the obvious stuff about your university education. You won’t need a CV, we’ll be able to get everything we need to know from the information you give us.

Locations are listed under each role profile and may change as recruitment progresses. You can select more than one location on the form, and if you’re invited to our Assessment Centre we’ll confirm what’s still available when we book your place. Please think carefully if a move would mean a big change; plan accommodation and travel in advance.

No, you don’t need a CV! We’ll ask you some questions about your degree and any experience you might have as part of your application. We don’t need a CV as well.

Applications will be open from Monday 2nd February until Sunday 22nd February. Despite the close date, we always recommend that you submit your application as early as possible.

You’ll receive an email from us to confirm that we’ve received your application. If, based on the information provided, you match the requirements for the role, we’ll invite you to complete our online assessment. If we need to ask anything about your application we’ll be in touch within a week.

Due to high volumes, responses aren’t always immediate, but we’ll keep you updated. You can also log in to review your status.

We classify the below degrees as STEM for the purposes of our graduate programmes (please note, this list is not exhaustive):

  • Aerospace engineering
  • Biochemistry
  • Biology
  • Chemical engineering
  • Chemistry
  • Computer science
  • Electrical engineering
  • Mathematics
  • Mechanical engineering
  • Physics
  • Statistics

If you’ve studied something like Psychology, Astronomy or Civil Engineering, or aren’t sure if we’d consider your degree as STEM or not, email our Talent Acquisition team on recruit@bt.com and they’ll be able to advise you.

Yes. There’s no specific graduation year requirement - if you meet the entry criteria you are still welcome to apply.

Yes, the process is the same for internal and external applicants. If you’re an existing employee currently completing an apprenticeship, you must finish it before applying.

The Programme

All our graduate and industrial placements start in September 2026, the specific date will be confirmed but you’ll need to be available from the start of September.

Our summer placements take place in the Summer of 2026.

When you successfully complete your graduate programme and secure a role within the business, you’ll transition to the standard terms and conditions (including the salary range) for new recruits in that position at that time. We’ll work closely with you throughout the process to support your next steps and help you explore opportunities within the organisation.

You’ll be placed where there’s a team to support you and can expect to remain in that location for the duration of the programme or as long as you’re in that role.

This depends on the role you have applied for– some of them have a rotational element but some of them will see you staying in the same area for the duration of the programme. Some roles and some areas of the business are more suited to rotations but we’ll always work with you to give you a broad range of experience.

Entry requirements

Some areas work on highly sensitive projects requiring SC or DV clearance. You’ll first have a pre national security screening interview. Generally, to meet initial criteria you must be a born or naturalised British citizen with one British parent, have substantial UK ties, and have lived in the UK for nine of the last ten years (with certain exceptions). Dual nationals may be asked to rescind, depending on circumstances. Not every role requires clearance; we’ll tell you before your assessment centre and you may opt to swap to another role or programme. Click here to learn more about UK security clearance

We gather details at initial application, then require evidence at the assessment centre stage and again at offer stage.

International candidates

We welcome applications from international candidates. However it is essential that you have the right to work full time in the UK at the start date of the programme (this will be early September 2026) and for the entire duration of the programme. We will check this with you and it will be a condition of any offer we make that we are satisfied your right to work is in place before you join. We are unlikely to progress applications where sponsorship is required to obtain a Tier 2 (general) visa as we expect to be able to fill all our roles with candidates who have the right to work in place.

Your share code and details of your course and dates.

Online assessment

The online assessment is made up of a text interview and video question. You’ll answer 5 text questions and one 90 second video aimed at understanding your potential and approach to learning and working. It includes situational and “tell me about a time…” questions. There are no right or wrong answers and no time limit on either task; it typically takes 30–35 minutes, But there’s no time limit, and you can pause and resume. We also offer the Recite Me facility. Internal BT candidates are advised to use personal devices. Contact recruit@bt.com to discuss support.

It’s important to let us know this before you start the test. Please get in touch with us at recruit@bt.com and we’ll get back to you to understand how we can best support you.

The assessment works on compatible smartphones (Android/iOS), tablets, and PCs. If you have issues, you should get in touch with us at recruit@bt.com and we’ll have a look and get back to you as quickly as possible.

You’ll have 5 days from the day we invite you to complete them – but the sooner you take them the sooner we can consider you for the next stage in the recruitment process.

BT Group is very invested in creating the best candidate experience in Early Careers and we want to reward the time you invest in our recruitment process by providing you with a personalised feedback report on your five text based questions, including one coaching tip and your key behavioural strengths.

These situations will be handled on a case by case basis – you can email our team at recruit@bt.com and let us know the circumstances and we’ll see what we can do.

Screening call

Before we move forward, we just need to confirm a few important details - like your right to work in the UK and the qualifications for the programme you’ve chosen. Having your supporting documents ready will help us keep things moving smoothly. This can be arranged at a suitable time and shouldn’t take more than 20 minutes. Have your diary handy too so we can book you in for your Assessment Centre too.

Assessment centre

Typically 3 hours, in person. You’ll do a group exercise and a competency based interview. We’ll send more details with your invite, and you’ll learn more about BT on the day. For some roles you may not need to attend a face to face assessment centre, this may be virtual or just a face to face competency interview at the location you applied for.

We’ll try to find alternative dates, but if vacancies fill there may not be another option. Please contact the person who booked you in to discuss.

Your Right to Work documents (e.g., passport and proof of address; if you haven’t got this, we may ask for your birth certificate and National Insurance Number). You'll also need to bring relevant qualification certificates. Placement students should bring university term dates. International students should bring a share code and course details.

We don’t expect to see everyone wearing a suit, just make sure you’re comfortable. Remember, at the end of the day it is an interview, and you’ll be meeting people that you could be working with in the future, so make sure you’re happy with how you’ll be representing yourself.

We aim to notify all candidates within 2 weeks of attending an assessment event on your outcome. We will be in touch with you via either phone call or email.

Yes. You can request feedback; we’ll share key behavioural strengths and areas for improvement.

You aren’t in direct competition with the other candidates that attend on the day so relax, we want to see the real you. Try and overcome any nerves you might have and enjoy the exercises that you’ll go through. We hope you enjoy the experience and learn more about us as a business and as a group of people.

Offer

There is a lot of planning work that goes into shaping our graduate intake so we can’t support any deferral applications.

Part of our graduate offering is a one off relocation allowance of up to £600 which can be used against any expenses you incur through moving, and you can even use it towards your first month’s rent in your new home. We may also make available the option for an interest free loan once you have joined.

In peak times this can take a little longer than we’d like – but this isn’t anything to worry about. You can typically expect to receive your contract within 2 weeks of accepting an offer with us. All of our contracts are digital so you can expect a copy to land in your emails and you can sign and return online.

Yes, it is conditional on a few things – meeting the entry requirements, satisfying eligibility criteria for working in the UK and satisfactorily completing all the onboarding checks that we need to complete – all of the conditions are set out in your contract.

At times there can be quite a long period between accepting your offer and joining us and for some of this you may not hear too much from us, especially whilst we continue our recruitment…but don’t worry, we haven’t forgotten you.

As time goes on there will be a number of things we’ll ask of you as part of our ‘On-boarding’ and lots of ways we’ll start to get you excited and informed as part of our ‘Keep -warm’ before you start.

During this phase we’ll send you various forms to complete – all the standard items that you might expect such as bank details and right to work documents. We’ll also ask you for some photos for your passcard and to complete a couple of other documents. We’ll tell you what we need and why so it’s nothing to worry about.

In the 6 months or so before joining, we’ll start communicating about joining. This will include things like access to our New Joiner website, our Facebook group, details of any pre-joining events and socials, Facebook live events, office visits and importantly details of your induction event. These are a great way of you getting to know all your fellow new joiners and starting to build a great network.

You’ll be eligible for benefits from your first day. You’ll get access to perks , such as discounted BT TV and TNT Sports, discounts on BT Mobile, and optional benefits like dental insurance, gym memberships and more.

Neurodiversity and other health-related conditions

Yes. A BT recruiter will contact you directly to talk through the full assessment journey and agree with you on what additional support can be put in place. You can request this support during profile creation, during your screening call, or at any stage of the process. If you need anything, please reach out at recruit@bt.com — we are here to help.

No. Any adjustments you receive are simply there to help you demonstrate your best. They do not affect your scoring or your chances in the process.

You will begin with an untimed online assessment designed to understand your potential and your approach to learning and working. As part of this, you will complete an online text response section that includes a mix of five scenariobased and experiencebased questions. You will then complete one video question, where you can record a 90second response and have up to five attempts to submit an answer you are happy with.

After the online assessment, you will have a short screening call with a recruiter. This helps us confirm the essential role requirements and gives you a chance to ask any questions.

If successful, you will be invited to an assessment centre. During this stage, you will take part in an onsite competencybased interview with five questions. For some programmes, you will also complete a group exercise focused on AI. For our Field roles, the assessment centre consists of the competency interview only.

Yes. Our Online Assessment is designed to be as inclusive and accessible as possible. The platform is compatible with screen readers, and the assessment is untimed, allowing you to move through each section at your own pace. It is also mobilefriendly, so you can choose the device that suits you best.

We also use ReciteMe, an accessibility tool that offers features such as colourcontrast options, screenreader support, screen magnification, and a range of other tools to help you have a comfortable and inclusive experience.

When completing the written response questions, you will be able to work in your own time. You can edit your answers whenever you need to and scroll back to the top of the page if you’d like to review any of the information before submitting. If you prefer not to type, you can use your device’s builtin voicetotext technology to complete the Chat Interview questions.

For the Video Interview, you will have preparation time before recording your answer to the single video question. You will also have up to five attempts, giving you the flexibility to record a response you feel confident about.

During the screening call, a recruiter will speak with you to confirm essential role requirements such as right to work or qualifications. If a phone call is not accessible or comfortable for you, we can use Teams audio, Teams video, or another method that works better for you.

At the assessment event, you will take part in a group exercise and a competency based interview. If you are applying for one of our Field roles, your assessment event will consist only of the competency interview.

You may be asked questions such as how you would approach a task where the instructions are unclear, how you worked successfully with someone with a very different style from your own, or how you gathered information and broke down a problem before working out how to solve it.

You can have a companion attend with you on the day if that would help. Sensory kits can also be provided, and we can offer accessible printed materials, laptops with Immersive Reader, alternative fonts or bold formats, and coloured paper. If you need a quieter environment, we can arrange quiet waiting areas or an early arrival option, and you can take breaks between tasks if needed.

If you require British Sign Language interpretation, companion support, or a buddy, this can be explored. Your recruiter will check in with you before and after the assessment to make sure everything agreed has been put in place.

Most assessment events take place in fully accessible BT flagship buildings, which include stepfree access, accessible toilets, lift access, and clear signage. If your assessment is being held in one of our Exchange network buildings, your recruiter will discuss the layout and accessibility with you in advance. We can also arrange site visits if you would find that helpful.

If you’re unsure about what would help you, you can email recruit@bt.com, and our recruiters will work with you to explore suitable options and talk through the process.

Yes. We will check in with you and you can update or change your support needs at any time.
