The Programme

Intermediate – You’ll work towards a Level 2 qualification through work based learning whilst also achieving functional skills.

Advanced – You’ll work towards a Level 3 NVQ through work based learning, which is supported by a knowledge based qualification such as a BTEC.

Higher – You’ll work towards Level 4 through work based learning which is consolidated by the achievement of a foundation degree.

Full degree – You’ll work towards our work based learning degree qualification.

The length of the apprenticeships we offer will depend on the programme and the level of qualification you are working towards. This can range from 12 months to 4 years.

All of our apprentice programmes are full time 37.5 hours per week. So unless you are able to fit the college course around your working hours, this may not be possible.

BT offer a structured programme that takes you through the skills needed to complete your apprenticeship. Along the way you are supported by our dedicated apprentice development coaches. As most of the time is spent in the workplace, the majority of training takes place on the job. However, a few of our apprenticeships do have additional training taking place at a college or a specialist training organisation. The outcome of this blended learning method will be a vocational qualification which will help you succeed in your job and progress in your future career.

Your performance will be reviewed against your personal and team objectives. You will have regular meetings with your manager and your dedicated apprentice coach to discuss your development. You’ll also be working towards a professional qualification and progress will be monitored through course work and exams.

Your starting salary for apprenticeships range from £21,620 to £23,810 per annum. Increases are determined by your performance against set milestones throughout the apprenticeship.

When you successfully complete your apprenticeship and secure a role within the business, you’ll transition to the standard terms and conditions (including the salary range) for new recruits in that position at that time. We’ll work closely with you throughout the process to support your next steps and help you explore opportunities within the organisation.

We are committed to working with a high quality subcontractor who will provide training and assessment to support our Apprenticeship programme.

Yes, but your terms of employment and salary will change.

Yes. As you are not directly employed by BT you can apply as normal.

Only that you need to be of at least minimum school leaving age when you start your apprenticeship.

You wouldn’t be eligible if you have already achieved the skills, knowledge and behaviours that would form part of the BT Apprenticeship you have applied for. If you hold qualifications in the same subject area, that are at a higher grade than the BT Apprenticeship you have applied for and/or the BT Apprenticeship replicates learning you have already completed elsewhere. Finally if you are undertaking another Apprenticeship you can only do one at a time.

Entry requirements

This depends on the apprenticeship you are applying for. Please review the vacancies in your location to confirm the exact requirements. For most of our apprenticeships you will need 5 GCSE’s Grade 4 9 (C or above) as a minimum and this may include English Language and Maths.

Grades 4 to 9 are equivalent grades to GCSE A* C. We won’t accept Grades 3 U within the new grading structure.

Yes we do accept equivalent Scottish qualifications, the table below gives an indication of the mapping to GSCE and A Level qualifications.

We accept level 2 functional skills as they are equivalent to a GCSE C. Level 1 in functional skill is equivalent to a GCSE D so we do not accept that as an equivalent qualification.

Unfortunately not, we can only accept the original certificates or a certified statement of results. Please check the certificates carefully. If you do not have the original certificates you will need to go the examining board to get copies. Please note each examining board will charge you for this service.

Screening calls

Before we move forward, we just need to confirm a few important details - like your right to work in the UK and the qualifications for the programme you’ve chosen. Having your supporting documents ready will help us keep things moving smoothly. This can be arranged at a suitable time and shouldn’t take more than 20 minutes. Have your diary handy too so we can book you in for your Assessment Centre too.

Assessment centre

They typically last 3 hours and are in person. You will be involved in a Group exercise and a competency based Interview. These are designed to check whether a BT apprenticeship would be right for you. We’ll send you more detailed information with your Assessment Centre invite. On the day you’ll be able to understand more about BT and the apprenticeships on offer. Some of our roles will be a Competency interview only at the location you have applied for.

We have a variety of offices across the UK, but some roles only operate in certain areas – under each of our role profiles you’ll see in which locations our roles are available. Please make sure you check this out before you submit your application as we’ll update available locations as we recruit. You’ll have the opportunity to select more than one location on the application form. The number of roles we will have in our locations will vary. If you’re successful in being invited to our Assessment Centre we’ll let you know what locations are still available when we book your place.

Please think carefully about your choice – if it means a big change of location from where you are currently living. You will need to think about accommodation and travel well in advance.

We’ll need to have a look and see if there are other dates we can invite you to. However, there is the possibility that we’ll fill all our vacancies and so there may not be another date to offer. Contact us on recruit@bt.com and speak to the person that booked you in for the event and we’ll take it from there.

You will need to bring along your Right to Work documents, the recruitment team will advise you what to bring when they book you in, but you will need, photo identification (Passport) and proof of address and if you haven’t got these we may ask for further documents like your birth certificate and National Insurance Number.

You will also need to bring with you any relevant qualification certificates that you weren’t able to add to your application form when you initially applied. If you don’t bring them we may have to exclude you from the event, and your application may stop here.

Placement students we will also ask for University term dates.

International students – you will be asked for your share code and details of your course and dates.

Call or email the contact on your invite to discuss the problem. They’ll be able to help advise you on what you will need to do.

The dress code is smart casual. We want you to be comfortable.

If you haven’t received an email three days before the day then send an email to the recruitment team at recruit@bt.com who will investigate and send one to you. Check in your junk email box before just in case.

We will let you know the outcome within 2 weeks of you attending. You’ll be contacted by telephone or email advising you of the outcome.

We are very invested in creating the best candidate experience in Early Careers and we want to reward the time you invest in our recruitment process by providing you with immediate, and hopefully insightful, feedback. When you have completed the Assessment Centre, you will be able to request your feedback and we will share the key behavioural strengths and areas for improvement.

If you are successful in your text interview and video question and there is an available vacancy in your area you’ll be progressed to the next stage, which is to be considered for an assessment centre. Please be aware that getting to this stage doesn’t guarantee that you will be invited to an Assessment Centre as unfortunately we can’t interview all applicants and therefore we choose the most suitable candidates based on assessment scores.

Neurodiversity and other health-related conditions

Yes. A BT recruiter will contact you directly to talk through the full assessment journey and agree with you on what additional support can be put in place. You can request this support during profile creation, during your screening call, or at any stage of the process. If you need anything, please reach out at recruit@bt.com — we are here to help.

No. Any adjustments you receive are simply there to help you demonstrate your best. They do not affect your scoring or your chances in the process.

You will begin with an untimed online assessment designed to understand your potential and your approach to learning and working. As part of this, you will complete an online text response section that includes a mix of five scenariobased and experiencebased questions. You will then complete one video question, where you can record a 90second response and have up to five attempts to submit an answer you are happy with.

After the online assessment, you will have a short screening call with a recruiter. This helps us confirm the essential role requirements and gives you a chance to ask any questions.

If successful, you will be invited to an assessment centre. During this stage, you will take part in an onsite competencybased interview with five questions. For some programmes, you will also complete a group exercise focused on AI. For our Field roles, the assessment centre consists of the competency interview only.

Yes. Our Online Assessment is designed to be as inclusive and accessible as possible. The platform is compatible with screen readers, and the assessment is untimed, allowing you to move through each section at your own pace. It is also mobilefriendly, so you can choose the device that suits you best.

We also use ReciteMe, an accessibility tool that offers features such as colourcontrast options, screenreader support, screen magnification, and a range of other tools to help you have a comfortable and inclusive experience.

When completing the written response questions, you will be able to work in your own time. You can edit your answers whenever you need to and scroll back to the top of the page if you’d like to review any of the information before submitting. If you prefer not to type, you can use your device’s builtin voicetotext technology to complete the Chat Interview questions.

For the Video Interview, you will have preparation time before recording your answer to the single video question. You will also have up to five attempts, giving you the flexibility to record a response you feel confident about.

During the screening call, a recruiter will speak with you to confirm essential role requirements such as right to work or qualifications. If a phone call is not accessible or comfortable for you, we can use Teams audio, Teams video, or another method that works better for you.

At the assessment event, you will take part in a group exercise and a competency based interview. If you are applying for one of our Field roles, your assessment event will consist only of the competency interview.

You may be asked questions such as how you would approach a task where the instructions are unclear, how you worked successfully with someone with a very different style from your own, or how you gathered information and broke down a problem before working out how to solve it.

You can have a companion attend with you on the day if that would help. Sensory kits can also be provided, and we can offer accessible printed materials, laptops with Immersive Reader, alternative fonts or bold formats, and coloured paper. If you need a quieter environment, we can arrange quiet waiting areas or an early arrival option, and you can take breaks between tasks if needed.

If you require British Sign Language interpretation, companion support, or a buddy, this can be explored. Your recruiter will check in with you before and after the assessment to make sure everything agreed has been put in place.

Most assessment events take place in fully accessible BT flagship buildings, which include stepfree access, accessible toilets, lift access, and clear signage. If your assessment is being held in one of our Exchange network buildings, your recruiter will discuss the layout and accessibility with you in advance. We can also arrange site visits if you would find that helpful.

If you’re unsure about what would help you, you can email recruit@bt.com, and our recruiters will work with you to explore suitable options and talk through the process.

Yes. We will check in with you and you can update or change your support needs at any time.
