About the role

The Broadband Data and Authentication Team is part of Broadband ISP Tribe and is responsible for platforms and services that support millions of customers across BT's broadband portfolio. We bring together design, development and test capabilities within a single organisation. Working in cross-functional Agile delivery teams, we combine software engineering, quality engineering and technical design expertise to develop, operate and continually improve critical products and platforms using modern software engineering, SRE and DevOps practices.

Our teams engineer and operate nationally critical platforms that enable broadband connectivity, authentication, service data, operational insight and customer experience for millions of BT customers. These platforms span public cloud, private cloud and on-premises environments, with ongoing investment in platform modernisation, automation and engineering excellence

As a Software Engineering Specialist, you will lead the technical delivery and implementation of complex software solutions, shape engineering standards and practices, and influence the technical roadmap. You will work closely with architects, engineers and stakeholders to improve engineering quality, reliability, maintainability and delivery effectiveness.

What you’ll be doing

  • Technical leadership: Lead the technical execution of the engineering strategy, shaping standards, practices and ways of working across products and platforms.
  • Technical decisions: Influence technology choices, engineering approaches and implementation strategies. Work with architects and stakeholders to challenge assumptions and promote alignment and reuse across Broadband ISP.
  • Technical roadmap: Influence and shape technical roadmaps so engineering investment aligns with customer outcomes, business priorities and long-term platform evolution.
  • Software engineering: Lead the engineering delivery of complex software solutions, guiding implementation approaches and the development of high-quality, scalable and maintainable products and services.
  • Problem solving: Solve complex technical and operational challenges, applying deep engineering expertise to develop scalable solutions where established approaches may not exist.
  • Operational excellence: Lead improvements to service reliability, resilience, observability and operational efficiency. Use engineering metrics, service data and operational insight to reduce risk and drive continual improvement.
  • Engineering culture: Champion engineering excellence, technical curiosity, knowledge sharing and accountability, enabling teams to deliver high-quality outcomes for customers and the business.
  • Mentoring: Coach and mentor engineers to build technical capability, improve engineering standards and support continuous improvement across the wider team.
  • Technology trends: Evaluate emerging technologies, tools and engineering practices, identifying opportunities to improve products, engineering effectiveness and customer outcomes.
  • Stakeholder management: Manage relationships and expectations across teams and stakeholders, ensuring technical dependencies, risks and issues are understood and addressed.
  • Team wellbeing: Contribute actively to an inclusive, safe and supportive team culture.

Essential Skills / Experience

  • Strong software engineering capability: Proven ability to design, develop, test, troubleshoot and support high-quality, scalable and maintainable software. This cannot just be theoretical - the individual needs enough engineering depth to lead implementation and challenge technical approaches.
  • Technical leadership of complex delivery: Experience leading the end-to-end technical delivery of complex software products or platforms in an Agile environment, including managing dependencies, risks and technical issues. This is the key distinction between this role and a standard software engineering position.
  • Technical influence and collaboration: The ability to influence technical decisions, challenge assumptions, and work effectively with architects, engineers and stakeholders across multiple teams and business units.

Desirable Skills / Experience

  • Experience delivering large, complex technical initiatives, managing dependencies, risks and issues across multiple stakeholders.
  • Strong experience with cloud technologies, particularly AWS, Google Cloud Platform and OpenStack.
  • Experience implementing CI/CD practices, automated delivery pipelines and Infrastructure as Code (IaC).
  • Experience improving engineering quality, reliability, maintainability and operational efficiency across software products or platforms.
  • Strong problem-solving and engineering skills, including coding, debugging, testing and troubleshooting, using Ruby, Python or Java.
  • Experience with containerisation and orchestration, including Docker, Docker Compose and Kubernetes.
  • Experience with monitoring, observability and data technologies, including ELK Stack, Kafka, Monit, Telegraf and Prometheus.
  • Experience using engineering metrics and data analysis to improve ways of working and reduce technical debt, alongside mentoring and developing engineers and working with databases such as SQL, Oracle and PostgreSQL.
