About the role
Microsoft 365 is the core productivity, collaboration and identity platform for BT Group, Facilitating tens of thousands of colleagues globally. This role provides end‑to‑end ownership of the M365 platform, ensuring it is secure, resilient, persona‑driven, cost‑effective and continuously evolving.
The Senior Manager, M365 Platform is Liable for platform strategy, engineering, operations, governance and transformation, spanning collaboration tools, device management, identity, virtual desktop, messaging and AI‑enabled operations. The role is critical in enabling cloud‑first delivery, AI‑driven assist (AIOps) and a modern colleague experience at scale.
What you’ll be doing
1. M365 Platform Ownership & Strategy
- Own the end‑to‑end Microsoft 365 platform across:
- Office applications
- Microsoft Teams
- Viva Engage
- SharePoint & OneDrive
- Exchange Online
- Define and deliver the M365 platform strategy and roadmap, aligned to BT’s Digital Workplace and AI ambitions.
- Act as the senior platform owner for availability, performance, security and colleague experience.
2. Device Management, Intune & Modern Endpoint
- Lead Intune‑based device management with persona‑ and user‑level personalisation.
- Own modern device builds using MDM for:
- Windows
- macOS
- Drive zero‑touch deployment, application packaging, policy management and endpoint security.
- Partner with Device Lifecycle teams to ensure seamless build‑to‑assist integration.
3. Virtual Desktop (AVD)
- Own Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) strategy and delivery.
- Ensure secure, scalable remote access for colleagues, third parties and privileged users.
- Integrate identity, endpoint security and monitoring into the broader M365 ecosystem.
4. Messaging & Cloud Migration
- Own Exchange and messaging platforms, including:
- On‑premise mail environments
- Migration to Exchange Online
- Ensure secure, low‑risk migrations, operational stability and post‑migration optimisation.
- Decommission legacy platforms in line with BT’s cloud‑first strategy.
5. Tribe Governance, Controls & Operating Model
- Lead the M365 Tribe governance model, embedding:
- Clear platform standards
- Architecture guardrails
- Engineering quality controls
- Ensure alignment with Digital Workplace governance, Security, Architecture and AI CoEs.
- Balance federated delivery with strong central controls to avoid platform sprawl.
6. AI‑Enabled Platform Operations (AIOps)
- Demonstrate and lead the use of AI for platform build and assist, including:
- Proactive incident detection and resolution
- Platform telemetry and anomaly detection
- Intelligent automation for operations and assist
- Leverage Microsoft Copilot, analytics and automation to improve reliability and reduce cost‑to‑serve.
- Partner with AI and Agentic CoEs to embed AI into day‑to‑day platform operations.
7. Governance, Reporting & Performance Management
- Own platform governance, reporting and insights, including:
- Platform health and availability
- Adoption and usage metrics
- Security, compliance and risk
- Cost and licence optimisation
- Produce clear, executive‑ready dashboards for MDs, ExCo and SteerCos.
- Use data to drive continuous improvement and investment decisions.
- 8. Leadership & Transformation
- Lead and develop high‑performing engineering, platform and governance teams.
- Drive skills uplift in cloud, AI, automation and modern endpoint engineering.
- Act as a senior leader within Digital Workplace, shaping future platform and operating models.
Essential Skills / Experience
- Deep, hands‑on experience across the Microsoft 365 ecosystem (Office, Teams, Viva, SharePoint, Exchange).
- Strong expertise in Intune, MDM, Windows & macOS device management.
- Experience delivering AVD and remote access platforms at enterprise scale.
- Proven track record in on‑prem to cloud migration, particularly messaging.
- Strong governance mindset with experience running platform tribes or CoEs.
- Demonstrable experience applying AI and automation (AIOps) to platform operations.
- Excellent stakeholder management at senior and executive levels.
- Data‑driven leader with strong reporting and commercial awareness.
