About the role
BT is in the middle of a large modernisation effort that will deliver significant benefits for our customers, our colleagues, society, and our shareholders. Some of our most important transformation programmes are ones no single BT division can deliver alone: for example, our AI transformation, our product and network simplification agenda, and our largest cross-unit programmes all cut across Consumer, Business, Networks, Digital and the Corporate Units. As a Transformation Senior Manager you will lead the shaping and delivery of some of those programmes, including building the plan, corralling the units behind it, and holding delivery to account, without taking ownership away from the units who hold the budgets, the teams and the capabilities.
One of your first areas of focus will be BT's AI Transformation. We have just completed the design of our AI operating model, and we now need to quickly move into execution: implementing the hub-and-spoke model with the units, turning a set of dispersed AI initiatives into a properly governed portfolio, and standing up the AI Hub as the central engine of BT's AI effort.
This is a deliberately broad role in its early phase. As our transformation programmes mature, we expect the role will specialise, and you will have helped shape what those roles become. It is a strong platform for someone who wants to build the model as well as run it, in the most visible part of BT's change agenda.
What you’ll be doing
The role works closely with the Group Transformation Director, Group Change colleagues, unit transformation leads and senior stakeholders across BT. Priorities will shift as the programmes are mobilised; versatility and the ability to take on responsibility wherever the need is most urgent are central to the role.
Key Elements of the role include
- Act as Group delivery lead for significant elements of a selected pan-BT transformation programme(s): building and owning the integrated plan, milestones, dependencies, benefits, cost and risk across contributing units
- Hold units to account for delivery against commitments, surfacing deviations early and driving them to resolution with accountable owners
- Support the review of strategy, scope and delivery models for in-flight programmes, and contribute to reshaping them where the current approach will not deliver the outcome
- Enable prioritisation and sequencing of dependencies, and sequence change so that the organisation can realistically absorb it alongside business as usual
- Contribute to the blueprint for how BT delivers large-scale cross-unit transformation, so that each subsequent programme mobilises faster than the last
- Implement BT's AI operating model with the units, working hand in hand with teams at very different levels of maturity to embed consistent ways of working
- Formalise dispersed AI initiatives into a single governed portfolio (business cases, clear owners, KPIs, plans, milestones and capability requirements) embedded within BT's standard transformation governance rather than run alongside it
- Support the stand-up of the AI Hub as a central function: the business plan, the tracking and reporting rhythm, and the value and cost baselines that make progress verifiable
- Contribute to the Hub's centre-of-excellence capabilities across target operating model design, process reengineering, capability building and change management
- Design change approaches fit for AI specifically
- Build and maintain the value case for the programmes in scope: benefits, enabling capex, opex and specific costs — and manage changes to it
- Ensure programmes in scope meet BT's transformation governance and assurance standards, and propose improvements where they are not fit for purpose
- Partner with and influence stakeholders at all levels, particularly unit leadership teams and unit transformation leads, to secure genuine buy-in rather than nominal agreement
Essential Skills / Experience
- Significant experience leading complex transformation workstreams or programmes across multiple business functions or units, with strong planning, governance and delivery discipline.
- A strong record of influencing senior stakeholders and driving change through a matrix organisation, balancing challenge with support to build genuine ownership.
- Commercial and financial acumen, including business cases, benefits, capital and operating cost allocations, and the confidence to test assumptions and presented data.
Desirable Skills / Experience
- Experience designing and setting up new operating models, governance frameworks or transformation delivery approaches.
- Experience as an embedded change partner, where success was measured through sustained delivery and adoption rather than advisory output alone.
- Experience delivering change management and adoption at scale in fast-moving or technically uncertain environments.
- Exposure to target operating model design, organisational design, process improvement or capability building.
- Knowledge of the technology or telecommunications sectors, including cloud, SaaS, AI and generative AI developments.
- Experience preparing clear, compelling materials for executive audiences and balancing conflicting stakeholder priorities.
- Comfort working with ambiguity, resilience under pressure and the ability to maintain momentum while structures are still developing.
- Genuine interest in the practical application of AI in a large organisation.
