About the role

The Software Engineering Specialist independently executes advanced activities to deliver the engineering strategy and roadmap that supports BT's commercial strategy through cross functional business partnering and the participation of a team that pursues innovation as well as engineering excellence.

Leads the architectural design and implementation of complex requirements across datacentre automation and connectivity.
Acts as technical lead and coach to the rest of the team.
Drives best practice in agility, TDD, deployment pipelines coding practice and containerisation

Breaks down highly complex processes and business needs into well-defined specifications that drive delivery.
Provides high quality, working software that enables BT to deliver effectively for customers.

 

 

What you’ll be doing

  • Leads on the implementation of technical solutions for both customers and colleagues and delivers on the resolution of inter-system issues, working within cross-functional squads to assist in creating and implementing technical solutions for a domain or cross domain activity within a specific technology area
  • Leads the execution of technical decisions, technology choices and architecture for a wide range of high-performance products, capabilities, and platforms, effectively balancing short-term impact with long-term transformation
  • Leads the design and development of software solutions in accordance with the wider architecture and security standards
  • Undertakes technical reviews to continually update knowledge and skills in software engineering principles and practices, ensuring a base level of technical specialism proficiency to enable industry and quality standards to positively impact work and customers
  • Leads and contributes to the designs of technical specifications and development of software solutions of smaller and /or less complex initiatives in partnership with team, contributing towards the quality of delivery
  • Writes, tests and reviews code, refining and rewriting as necessary under supervision and communicates to engineering professionals and colleagues involved in the project
  • Integrates existing software products and solves routine problems to enable incompatible platforms to work together
  • Maintains systems by monitoring and correcting software defects
  • Supports the implementation and maintenance of high-quality tools and automation processes to support continuous delivery and developer productivity
  • Supports the delivery of an ambitious and compelling technical roadmap to meet the needs of the business, engineering team, and partner teams
  • Support engineering and operational excellence initiatives, assisting with implementing metrics and processes for regular assessment and improvement
  • Involved in the implementation of ways to improve working processes within the area of software engineering responsibility
  • Responsible for unlocking and delivering benefits / efficiencies in the squad, with assistance of the squad members as required.
  • Contribute to the wider software engineering community.

Skills Required for the Role

  • Architecture and solutions design: skills in architecture definition and solutions design involving multiple components across architectural domains.
  • Integration key areas: Knowledge of RESTful API, Microservices, SOA web services, messaging and event driven architectures.
  • API security aspects: Strong knowledge of authentication and identity related technologies and protocols is an advantage – e.g. OIDC, OAuth2.
  • Web technologies and containerisation: Java Spring, Java/Typescript, React, Docker, Kubernetes and with a heavy focus on automation and CI/CD practises. Git versioning.
  • Agile software engineering: strong skills and experience building software in an agile team.
  • User story decomposition and management ability to take a complex design and break down into features, stories and tasks – working with the Agile SCRUM team to ensure a quality backlog with well-defined acceptance criteria that can be engineered.
  • Reflect and learn constantly, and have a growth mindset - Build, measure, learn
  • IT experience of the Enterprise telco business with specialist knowledge in at least one of Fixed & Mobile products, networks, sales, service, marketing, digital experiences.

Experience Required for the Role

MANDATORY:  

  • At least 4+ years of experience in Software Engineering
  • Solution Development 
  • Experience in Full-Stack software development  
  • Lead the end-to-end technical delivery of large complex projects with multiple internal and external stakeholders, identifying dependencies, risks, issues, costs, and providing accurate reporting. 
  • Understanding of CI/CD concepts and experience with automated pipelines  
  • Experience in building, maintaining and orchestrating docker containers with docker compose, Kubernetes is a plus.


PREFERRED: 

  • Experience with more than one programming language, desirably Java, JavaScript and Typescript
  • Experience of working with Infrastructure as 
  • Code tools and technologies 
  • Any experience with VMWare/Broadcom ecosystem 
  • Experience of working with ELK Stack and messaging systems (e.g. RabbitMQ and Kafka) 
  • Database skills – relational DBs
