Due to the sensitive nature of this role, you will be required to undergo DV (Developed Vetting) level Security Clearance (https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/united-kingdom-security-vetting-clearance-levels/national-security-vetting-clearance-levels). An allowance of £5k per annum may be payable monthly while you hold this DV and continue to work in a role that requires that level of security clearance. The terms of this allowance will be made available if you are successful in being recruited into this role.

About the role

Our team develop, maintain and operate big data platforms for one of our major customers. Comprised of big data storage platforms like Apache Hadoop and Ceph, OpenSearch and Elasticsearch, and a significant number of in-house developed applications in pyspark, scala and other languages to simplify our user’s interactions with the platform. These are built on a large remote Linux (predominantly) estate. The platform supports a suite of tools for storing, enriching, querying and visualising large amounts of data. The requirements can change at short notice, so the team uses a DevOps methodology to react to these changes and continue to provide the best customer service. 

This role requires DV Clearance and will be onsite 5 days a week in either London or Ipswich. 

What you’ll be doing

  • Responsible for 24 x 7 platform support including ongoing monitoring enhancements via scripting of custom tests and deployment/adaptation of built-in monitoring.
  • Manage project relationship with 24x7 monitoring teams both internal and external.
  • Monitoring and tracking platform performance and power utilisation.
  • Strong Communication skills working with individuals and teams at all levels (up to CTO and senior customers).
  • Producing and delivering training for the platform support teams. Onboarding new members of the support team.
  • Work closely with customers and internal stakeholders to plan outages and platform support & availability reporting including equipment and service upgrades whilst maintaining minimal if not zero outage deployments/upgrades.
  • Production of monthly platform reports, tailored to customers evolving requirements.
  • Ownership of thousands of assets across full lifecycle from order to decommissioning and destruction.
  • Deliver future site expansion capability – Managing deliveries across multiple sites and building the hardware and software stacks to evolving designs.
  • It is a requirement to work as part of the on call 24/7 rota, 1 week in 4.

Essential Skills / Experience

  • Excellent Communication skills. 
  • Ability to work to strict time constraints due to Customer priorities.
  • Ability to multitask due to rapidly changing priorities.
  • Server hardware installation/maintenance/management.
  • Linux Admin (rocky).
  • Proxmox (including HA and Ceph stores).
  • (python/scala) Spark. Ceph and/or HDFS.
  • OpenSearch/Elasticsearch cluster management.Operating system and firmware patching.
  • Ability to critique design documents to improve outcomes or understand limitations where required.

Desirable Skills / Experience

  • Network design/implementation (Cisco ASA/FTD and Dell OS10/SONIC). 
  • Check MK (nagios) administration and monitoring. including Nagvis and Business Intelligence (BI) development.
  • Windows Domain Admin (server 2022+).
  • MariaDB (multi-site replication, including active-active).
  • Knowledge of hardware/software based data boundary enforcement (diodes). Automated testing (Cypress & pytest) within CI/CD pipelines.
  • Python3/4.
