Function: Data & AI

Location: Birmingham-Three Snowhill

About the role

You'll play a key role in helping BT strengthen its Data & AI Governance capabilities across the Group. Working with senior stakeholders, you'll lead governance activities that improve data quality, accountability, compliance and AI governance maturity.

You'll help shape governance frameworks, influence decision-making through governance forums and Data Councils, and ensure governance controls are embedded across business and corporate units. This role requires someone who can operate confidently in a complex enterprise environment and demonstrate a track record of delivering governance outcomes rather than simply supporting them.

What you’ll be doing

  • Act as the primary Data & AI Governance contact for BT business units, supporting the adoption of governance policies, standards and frameworks.
  • Partner with data owners, business stakeholders, engineering teams and compliance functions to embed governance controls and best practices.
  • Lead and coordinate Data & AI Governance Working Groups across supported business areas.
  • Facilitate unit-level Data & AI Councils and governance forums.
  • Prepare governance reporting, risk updates, compliance summaries and executive briefings for senior stakeholders.
  • Monitor governance maturity, control adoption and compliance against agreed governance metrics.
  • Support implementation of governance controls including data ownership, metadata, classification, retention, quality and AI governance requirements.
  • Help business units understand and meet obligations relating to data and AI governance regulations and policies.
  • Support the development and delivery of governance awareness sessions, training and communications.
  • Collaborate with central governance teams to ensure business requirements are reflected within enterprise governance frameworks.
  • Track governance risks, issues and remediation activities while driving continuous improvement.
  • Support governance decision-making through evidence-based reporting and analysis.
  • Build strong relationships with senior stakeholders across BT Group.
  • Contribute to the ongoing evolution of BT's Data & AI Governance operating model.

Essential Skills / Experience

  • Proven experience leading and implementing Data Governance frameworks within a large enterprise organisation.
  • Strong knowledge of Data Governance controls, including Data Ownership, Data Stewardship, Data Quality, Metadata and Data Lineage.
  • Experience influencing senior stakeholders and leading Governance Forums, Data Councils or Working Groups to drive governance adoption and compliance.

Desirable Skills / Experience

  • Experience working within Telecommunications, Technology, Financial Services or other highly regulated industries.
  • Knowledge of AI Governance, Responsible AI principles and emerging AI regulatory requirements.
  • Understanding of DORA, regulatory control frameworks or operational resilience requirements.
  • Familiarity with BT's Key Control Framework (KCF).
  • Experience supporting organisation-wide governance transformation initiatives.
  • Knowledge of wholesale, Openreach or telecommunications regulatory obligations.
  • Experience delivering governance training, awareness programmes or capability uplift initiatives.
  • Understanding of data management tools, governance tooling or metadata platforms.
