Due to the sensitive nature of this role, you will be required to undergo DV (Developed Vetting) level Security Clearance (https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/united-kingdom-security-vetting-clearance-levels/national-security-vetting-clearance-levels). An allowance of £5k per annum may be payable monthly while you hold this DV and continue to work in a role that requires that level of security clearance. The terms of this allowance will be made available if you are successful in being recruited into this role.

About the role
The Cloud Engineering Principal leads the design and delivery of secure cloud-based solutions across the GSS Engineering domain, ensuring solutions meet customer requirements and conform to cloud best practice, including security and governance.
In addition, the Cloud Engineering Principal drives cloud adoption across GSS, with a focus on skills and supporting delivery teams on their cloud migration journey.
This job role can be based in London, Ipswich, Cheltenham or Manchester, Monday-Friday 37.5 hours per week. You will need to be eligible to obtain DV Security Clearance before starting this role. You will need to have lived in the UK for 10+ years to be eligible.
What you’ll be doing
- Operates as an SME within own field of expertise, guiding cloud system design activities and/or system designs to assure that solutions will exhibit expected levels of performance,
security, scalability, security, maintainability, appropriate reusability and reliability upon deployment - Leads the automation of cloud infrastructure provisioning and configuration management, self-service, infrastructure-as-code services, auto scale initiatives, and DevOps deployment
- Sets and monitors the defined SLAs, standards, metrics, product offering, processes, and evaluation criteria
- Owns the relationships with key stakeholders driving belief and mindset for cloud-native systems and educating on how to use platform capabilities effectively through appropriate
venue - Drives a risk-aware culture, ensuring efficient and effective risk and compliance management practices by adhering to required standards and processes
- Drives the identification, analysis and resolution of infrastructure vulnerabilities and application deployment issues
- Mentors and coaches experienced professionals to develop current and future team capabilities and ensure performance
- Leads the implementation of continuous improvement opportunities to improve the cloud engineering team processes
Essential Skills / Experience
- Cloud Strategy: Defines motivations and business outcomes for cloud adoption, ensuring alignment between business priorities and cloud adoption efforts.
- Solution Architecture: Develops solutions which fit within the enterprise architecture in terms of information architecture, system portfolios and integration requirements.
- Cloud Architecture/Design: Connects all components necessary to design and/or build cloud architecture, ensuring solutions are architected and designed to support business requirements.
- Cloud Security: Uses strategies designed to allow a business to use cloud applications while limiting potential threats and vulnerabilities.
- Cloud Infrastructure: Manages the setup, configuration, monitoring, and optimisation of the components of cloud infrastructure.
- Cloud Computing: Uses a network of remote servers hosted on the Internet to store, manage, and process data, rather than a local server or a personal computer.
- Cloud Storage: Uses a cloud computing model that stores data on the Internet through a cloud computing provider who manages and operates data storage as a service.
- Cloud Deployment: Develops the process of deploying an application through one or more hosting models. I.e. software as a service (SaaS), platform as a service (PaaS) and/or infrastructure as a service (IaaS).
- Agile Methodologies: Manages projects by dividing tasks into short phases of work (known as sprints) and frequently reassess and adapt plans.
- Strategic Planning: Defines the organisations strategy, or direction, and makes decisions on allocating its resources to pursue this strategy.
- Vendor Management: Creates, monitors and cultivates relationships with vendors to ensure business objectives are achieved.
- Deep understanding of the role of technology provider into the community (customer base)
- Mantains DV+ clearance
- Extensive experience leading end to end software/platforms/systems engineering teams
- Leading innovative and technically complex programmes of work in a professional services environment where research and development is at the core of its projects
Desirable Skills / Experience
- Member of a professional body desirable e.g. BCS / IET / qualified CEng.
