The Software Engineering Practitioner contributes to the development and evolution of BT’s software products and services by delivering high‑quality code, improving system reliability, and ensuring solutions meet both functional and non‑functional requirements. At this level, the engineer takes ownership of deliverables, contributes to technical decisions within a squad, and is trusted to work independently on scoped areas of work. They support continuous improvement across engineering practices and play an active role in maintaining product quality and stability.

What you’ll be doing

  • Delivers well‑engineered, reliable and secure software components, contributing to the design and build of features across products and services.
  • Owns defined technical tasks or user stories end‑to‑end, ensuring high‑quality implementation and timely delivery.
  • Participates in technical discussions, providing input into architecture, design choices, and technology selection within the squad.
  • Investigates and resolves defects, performance issues and inter‑system problems with increasing independence.
  • Writes clean, maintainable, well-tested code that adheres to engineering standards and best practices.
  • Contributes to systems integration, ensuring compatibility and smooth functioning across components and platforms.
  • Supports the improvement of build pipelines, test automation and CI/CD processes.
  • Maintains and enhances existing software systems through proactive monitoring, bug fixing and performance optimisation.

Essential Skills / Experience:

  • Comfortable working in cross‑functional Agile squads.
  • Competent in at least one language; delivers production‑quality code. (TypeScript & React)
  • Can identify root causes in complex software scenarios.
  • Follows SDLC practices and contributes to improving team processes.
  • Experience contributing to code reviews, testing practices and release readiness.

Desirable Skills/ Experience:

  • Evidence of supporting improvements to quality, automation, performance or engineering workflow.
  • Able to explain technical concepts to junior engineers and help onboard new starters.
