studies. The IMS & Mobile Voice team is responsible for designing and capacity planning a network that supports
over 30 million users across 2G, 4G, 5G, Wi-Fi & Fixed telephony.
A Principal Network Designer will:
• Will have the opportunity to drive and work across multiple technologies, lead the newest IMS innovations
and create cutting edge services of the future
• Will challenge the individual to be best in the industry and be ahead of the curve with competition
• Will deliver and maintain services across fixed and mobile for both Consumer and Enterprise Customer
Facing Units
• Will be engaged in service and platform design and capacity management activities either as the Design
lead or in a supporting role to the project or BAU work activity
• Will have the opportunity to help design and deliver the strategic direction of the Voice Network through
interactions with Senior Management and the Architecture community
As such this role has a significant impact on shaping the Mobile Voice, Convergence Technologies & subsequent
budget required to deliver it.
What you’ll be doing
• Function as a technical Lead within a team of Design Authorities made up of Specialists and Professionals
• Strong experience of producing brilliant documentation of complex solutions
• Responsible for internal sign-off for any issued design documentation whether it be HLDs, LLDs, Service Requirements or Config Documents
• Provide consultancy to the business to help build IFDs, DADs, TADs
• Detailed understanding of voice core networks as well as wider understanding of mobile and BT core networks and services
• Analytical thinking with the ability to analyse and interpret data, network statistics and financial details
• Strong commercial mind-set and an ability to identify opportunities for efficiency
• Creates and implements technical solutions for a domain or across domains / portfolios of work within a specific technology area
• Autonomously, understanding how solutions impact systems internally and/or externally and assessing impact of change
• Provides technical quality assurance over work of other engineers through matrix team structure
• Provides sound technical expertise to consult on significant component(s) of a technical solution within a specific domain or cross domain
• Identifies opportunities to improve standards of practice within a project, continuously enhancing ways of working
• Reallocates work internally and externally by breaking down technical solutions into smaller delivery elements
• Responsible for flagging and eliminating any potential single point of failure within designs, architecture
• Provide mentoring and coaching to help evolve team skills, host knowledge sessions and design forums
• Support the Senior Manager in the ongoing monthly monitoring and reporting of budgets, CAPEX forecast vs CAPEX spent for planned activities
The skills you’ll need
Expertise: Possess an authoritative understanding of Mobile Voice Networks, Interfaces, Protocols, Standards, and Specifications.
Telecom Knowledge (Demonstrable skills in):
• Circuit Switch and IMS VoLTE/VoWiFi/5G Voice
• Fixed voice services
• Fixed-mobile convergence (FMC)
• API Design and Development
• HTTP/SIP/Diameter/DNS/H.248/CAMEL/SBI
• IP Networking
• NFVi, Cloud, and Containerisation Platform and Software Security
• Software Engineering Practices
• Proven experience in senior design roles for voice networks.
• Effectively communicated complex technical details to diverse audiences.
• Collaborated with multiple teams and vendors to customize networks, enhancing features and functionality.
• Worked positively with colleagues inside and outside BT to achieve optimal solutions and practices.
• Built a strong internal network of relationships to support your role.
• Actively engaged in strategy-setting sessions
