About the role
At BT, our strategy is how we respond to our customers, outpace competitors, and adapt to a fast-changing world. Strategy & Change is where that happens. We set BT’s direction and work with every part of the business to make it real. Our teams cover the full journey – from shaping the big picture, to making change happen on the ground, to creating what comes next.
Within Strategy & Change, the Group Strategy & Insight team works across the whole business to create a set of integrated strategies and plans, based on deep insight from customers, markets and competitors to drive long-term value creation. As part of the Group Strategy & Insight team, the Commercial Strategy team has a critical role to play on investments in cutting-edge 5G and FTTP technologies. Our team articulates the impact of strategic decisions and commercial opportunities on different customer facing units (CFUs) and manages trade-offs to ensure our investments deliver BT’s strategic priorities. We have wide ranging exposure across BT and our work feeds directly into strategic and investment decisions within BT and informs decision making at the highest level.
This role sits at the intersection of strategy, commercial decision‑making, and people‑centred change. Our work shapes some of the most complex and consequential decisions BT makes. Success in this role is about having the right answer and bringing people with you. You will work with senior leaders across BT who hold different incentives, pressures and perspectives and impact will come from your ability to listen, build trust, frame trade‑offs clearly, and create shared ownership of decisions.
What you’ll be doing
As a Senior Strategy Manager, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future direction of BT by leading strategic problem solving and delivering bold strategic and commercial recommendations:
- Lead complex, ambiguous strategic problems using data and judgement to create alignment
- Translate complex data and customer insight into compelling narratives with clear, actionable recommendations that create shared ownership of outcomes and a clear path to execution
- Build strong relationships across different units, collaborating effectively to engage and influence stakeholders at all levels to ensure our recommendations are owned collectively
- Build enduring expertise in the team on commercial modelling and customer perspectives
This is a role for someone who combines strong strategic and analytical capabilities with emotional intelligence, curiosity about people, and confidence operating through influence.
Essential Skills / Experience
- Proven experience delivering strategic or commercial outcomes by executive and board ready recommendations – e.g. investment prioritisation, pricing, product portfolio decisions - combining robust analysis with effective stakeholder engagement
- Proven experience building and owning commercial models & business cases (e.g. NPV/IRR & scenario modelling) with clear accountability for recommendations
- Track record of translating complex data and insight into clear, concise narratives for senior audiences
- Experience shaping outcomes with senior stakeholders across business units holding differing objectives, through trust, clarity, and credibility
- Experience using judgement to balance evidence, risk and uncertainty to form clear and actionable recommendations without defaulting to analysis alone.
Desirable Skills / Experience
- Background in strategy roles (in‑house or consulting), operating in complex, matrixed organisations
- High emotional intelligence, including the ability to listen, challenge constructively and navigate disagreement
- Comfortable operating in ambiguity
- Adaptive communication style, tailoring content and approach to different audiences and forums
- Collaborative team player, committed to building collective ownership and contributing to a high performing, supportive team culture
