Why this job matters
The Software Engineering Manager coordinates the execution of the engineering strategy and roadmap that supports BT's commercial strategy through cross functional business partnering and the participation of a team that pursues innovation as well as engineering excellence.
What you’ll be doing
1. Where necessary, act as a facilitator or task manager to own software deliveries in the assigned area of influence (TDM would be involved).
2. Make recommendations to Engineering Manager/Senior Manager regarding problem resolution.
3. The role holder needs to possess good hands-on technical expertise and design/development/ implementation experience in building large scale enterprise applications.
4. Strong and experienced individual who is self-motivated as well as able to mentor/guide other team members
5. The individual will have to perform design and development of functionalities and provide assistance in meeting business objectives, solving business problems and furthering business success by applying industry, applications and technical knowledge.
6. Solve problems with components delivered by the team; integration between systems; in-life deployment; and non-functional issues. Facilitate the team to scope the problem and determine a possible range of solutions.
7. Take ownership of problems which have a significant risk to a team’s delivery.
Perform impact analysis for planned and unplanned changes, including changes to cost, resource and functionality.
8. Within a team, lead and implement changes to the ways of working. Responsible for assuring technical changes that go into production.
9. The software has met all the agreed functional and non-functional acceptance criteria (passing all tests) across the team.
10. The software has been delivered to agreed timescales and within any budget constraints across all the component parts.
11. The software will meet all of the project's quality criteria (e.g. code coverage, complexity metrics as per software engineering handbook).
12. The software will be developed according to the practices described in the Software Engineering Handbook and in the project’s “Ways of Working” document.
13. Typically work on projects for 3-12 months
The skills you’ll need
1. Hands-on coding ability and strong analytical skills to trouble shoot and provide technological solutions using Java/J2EE, design Patterns, Oracle, PLSQL, WebLogic and JavaScript.
2. Understand DevOps model and CI/CD lifecycle.
3. Experience building new system design solutions and architectural patterns including Microservices and Containerisation support, Deployment architecture on Publick/Private Cloud, Automation of Testing using mix of TDD, BDD and Bespoke test suite, Monitoring and APM tools and Reporting.
4. Automating various processes in SDLC and ensuring adherence to different standards and design patterns.
5. Understanding of various delivery methodologies like Agile, Waterfall etc.
6. Tools like JIRA, STORM, ACF, RSA, HP ALM etc…
7. Understanding of TOSCA, YANG, SID, Open API and ODA.
8. Should possess good telecom OSS knowledge in areas like Planning, Inventory management, capacity management, orchestration and Activation.
9. Working knowledge of performance tuning of application and continuous integration techniques.
10. Effective verbal and written communication skills.
11. Service Design patterns implementation and knowledge
