Why this job matters
This job is required to manage data using a database management system (DBMS) and database administration to assure the proper usage and deployments of the BT Group and Technology data and databases. The Third line DBA team support all Oracle Databases and associated components that form the teams deigned supported estate. Also, ensure database integrity is maintained and database access is secured.
What you’ll be doing
- Supports a component of a technical project, requiring management of a limited degree of risk or business impact.
- Assists with planning and monitoring of all activities, from scoping to live, to ensure agreed scope and benefits are delivered in a contained project.
- Develops working relationships and communicates with a range of project stakeholders across teams to ensure actions completed, progress updated and impacts on other components managed.
- Reviews own work and peers’ outputs to contribute to identify and flag errors or potential issues.
- Develop a mind-set that focuses on implementing Automation and continuous improvement processes.
- Adhere to database standards and suggest improvements, encourage use of MI consolidation platform by deliveries, migrations, and applications to reduce complexity of database estate.
- Assist with designing of data storage structures for the data described logically in application data models taking account of strategic direction, technical feasibility, performance criteria and cost effectiveness.
- To investigate of all raised issues impacting any aspect of the defined supported estate and consequently our customers; undertaking any necessary remedial action and completion of all defined administration activities. Escalate issues that affect multiple systems to Senior DBAs or management and contribute to assigned parts of projects to rectify.
- Participate in all knowledge sharing activities and provide web-based media content for wider DBA community, own DBA team and customers. Undertake assigned parts of cross-LOB domain (Expertise) activity. Establish and maintain effective BAU relationship with all teams that influence my team role or raise queries, initiating any contact required to deliver an outcome.
- Contribute to introduction of automation across all managed platforms where applicable for all support processes which will contribute to reduced cycle times, increased right first-time measures and increased self-service customer support. Work towards helping develop, implement and maintain strategy, standards and procedures for system support.
- Help to define, develop and implement pre-emptive maintenance, monitoring and housekeeping routines across all defined supported systems to demonstrate a reduction in reactive incidents. Provide weekly reports/feedback when requested
- Help service improvement initiatives saving space, cost and improving major system performance.
- Ensure all build requests are managed and delivered within the defined cycle time and are right first time.
- Implement DR and resiliency solutions.
- Ensure all new systems accepted into support have right first time, cycle time and automation principles embedded in their design, rejecting anything that is deemed as adding avoidable or manual support overheads.
- Work in a flexible manner to meet the support needs of the team and the expectations of our customer base.
- Develop own knowledge and skills to work towards becoming a DBA Professional.

Follow Change management process to protect BT services by supporting and controlling the enhancement, modification, removal or movement of any of the components that make up the IT estate - that is managed and/or supported by the Technology group.
- Communication & Collaboration - Provide consultancy and guidance to deliveries and applications, using own technical expertise to reduce database delivery cycle time and improve stability of business applications.
