About the role

The Software Engineering Professional supports the execution of BTs software engineering strategy through cross-functional delivery, contributing to the development of technical solutions and platforms that enable innovation and engineering excellence.

What you’ll be doing

Microsoft 365 platform engineering
• Engineer, configure and continuously improve SharePoint Online, Microsoft Teams, Exchange Online and Outlook, OneDrive, Microsoft 365 Groups and associated admin services.
• Deliver platform features, tenant configurations, policies and integrations using repeatable engineering patterns rather than manual administration.
• Support SharePoint modernisation, migration, content lifecycle, storage optimisation and decommissioning of legacy collaboration services.

Automation, integration and development
• Automate provisioning, configuration, reporting and remediation using PowerShell, Microsoft Graph, PnP PowerShell, Azure Automation and approved APIs.
• Develop or support SharePoint Framework extensions, Teams applications, adaptive cards, webhooks and integrations where standard capabilities do not meet the requirement.
• Maintain source control, peer review, testing, deployment pipelines, environment separation and engineering documentation for platform code and configuration.

Security, compliance and lifecycle
• Implement and maintain controls for Microsoft Entra ID, privileged administration, external sharing, guest access, app consent, information protection, retention and eDiscovery in partnership with security and compliance teams.
• Apply Microsoft Purview capabilities and governance patterns to protect information while enabling effective collaboration.
• Manage technical debt, roadmap dependencies, service changes, end-of-support risks and remediation plans across the Microsoft 365 estate.

Service reliability and stakeholder outcomes
• Monitor Microsoft 365 service health, message centre changes, usage, capacity, performance and operational risks; convert insight into preventative action.
• Troubleshoot complex platform incidents and recurring problems, perform root-cause analysis and implement permanent fixes and automation.
• Work with product owners, service teams, security, suppliers and business stakeholders to shape requirements, communicate change and improve colleague experience.

Essential Skills / Experience

• Hands-on engineering or administration experience across SharePoint Online, Microsoft Teams, Exchange Online or Outlook and OneDrive in a large Microsoft 365 environment.
• Strong PowerShell capability, including Microsoft Graph PowerShell and service-specific modules; experience automating repeatable administrative and reporting tasks.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Graph, REST APIs, authentication, app registrations, permissions and certificate or managed-identity based automation.
• Experience with Microsoft 365 tenant configuration, admin centres, service health, change management and operational support.
• Understanding of Microsoft Entra ID, role-based access, Conditional Access concepts, privileged access and collaboration security.
• Experience with SharePoint architecture, site and hub design, permissions, content types, search, migration and lifecycle governance.
• Ability to diagnose service issues using logs, audit data, message traces, Microsoft 365 service information and structured problem-management practices.
• Experience with Git, code review, testing and CI/CD through Azure DevOps or GitHub.

Desirable Skills / Experience

• Experience with SharePoint Framework, TypeScript, React, Teams app development, Adaptive Cards or Azure Functions.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Purview retention, sensitivity labels, data loss prevention, audit and eDiscovery.
• Experience with migration and administration tools such as SharePoint Migration Tool, Migration Manager or equivalent enterprise tooling.
• Experience with Microsoft Intune, Power Platform, Copilot for Microsoft 365 or Copilot Studio integration with collaboration services.
• Microsoft certifications such as MS-102, MS-700, MS-721, SC-300, SC-400 or equivalent practical capability.
• Experience of service ownership, platform governance and lifecycle management in a complex enterprise.
