This role is based out of our No3 Capital Quarter, Cardiff office. We have a hybrid working model of 3 days together and 2 days wherever.

Due to the nature of the work, you will need to be elegible for security clearance.

Why this job matters

BT is currently transforming the way it manages and stores data by moving from its existing on-premises platform to Google Cloud. As part of this role, you will be contributing to the engineering effort that will deliver this large-scale transformation. You will also be responsible for defining the standards and processes to allow delivery teams to be effective when deploying their solutions to Google Cloud. 

 

The Cloud Data Hub (CDH) squad manages project creation for the entire analytics area in BT. You will be contributing to CDH automaton framework and expanding it to support new architecture patterns for BT.

What you’ll be doing

  • Engineer, operate and continually improve Google Cloud platform capabilities that power Data & AI workloads across the organisation.
  • Design and implement standardised, reusable platform patterns (IaC, CI/CD, observability, security) that increase reliability and reduce manual effort.
  • Ensure the stability, performance and resilience of data platforms by applying SRE practices, automation and proactive incident prevention.
  • Lead engineering delivery of platform features, working closely with architects, data engineers and product teams to enable secure, scalable solutions.
  • Drive engineering-led cost optimisation, identifying inefficient configurations and implementing changes aligned to FinOps best practices.
  • Maintain excellent observability and monitoring across critical services, ensuring issues are detected early and resolved effectively.
  • Contribute to secure platform design, ensuring IAM, data protection, compliance and regulatory requirements are embedded in all engineering work.

 

Leadership accountabilities

  • Provide technical leadership and guidance within the Cloud Engineering squad, supporting best practices and raising engineering standards.
  • Play an active role in team development, mentoring engineers, sharing knowledge and contributing to a strong engineering culture.

Skills and Experience

Required

  • Strong experience engineering on Google Cloud for data or AI workloads.
  • Strong experience being hands on with Terraform and automated IaC delivery.
  • Strong experience with IAM, cloud security patterns and controls for regulated environments.


Preferred

  • Degree-level education in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience operating containerised workloads on GKE or Cloud Run.
  • Experience building data or platform pipelines using BigQuery / Pub/Sub / Dataflow / Composer.
  • Experience supporting air gapped or sovereign cloud environments.
  • Exposure to FinOps practices and engineering led cost optimisation.
  • Experience with Python or Go for platform tooling and automation.
  • Familiarity with Vertex AI, ML Ops workflows or data platform patterns.
