Why this job matters

The CRE platform is at the heart of BT’s core voice network called SDIN/ORION. The CRE Specialist Network Designer is an essential role responsible for the design of our core voice platform routing, enabling rapid deployment underpinning new products and protecting revenues in excess of £500 M.

 

What you’ll be doing – your accountabilities

  • Design leadership for BT’s Core Routing Engine (CRE) platform and its interfaces to all other BT systems. Hold accountability for technical decision making, effectively assessing and introducing new technology as part of the planning portfolio from proof of concept to delivery
  • Manage the technical interface to the supplier, ensuring that all developments are delivered to the expected scope, cost and quality.
  • Technical leadership of CRE platform designs, and co-ordination with all Customer, Test, OSS, Security and Operational team stakeholders
  • Ensure that all e2e service and Operational concerns are fully taken into account in designs
  • Responsible for production of high and low level design documentation as appropriate including initial settings - prior to test entry quality gate as defined in delivery plan
  • Managing peer reviews and providing sign off authority on designs associated with CRE components within network platforms and/or customer solutions
  • Take technical lead in resolution of any significant CRE in-life service affecting issues
  • Lead the ongoing definition of the CRE platform roadmap, ensuring engagement with all stakeholders in Technology and Product Line.
  • Ensure that designs are progressed in line with Delivery plan, and any issues are flagged to the Delivery manager. Support resolution of any issues to keep delivery on track.
  • Highlight any design risks encountered. Manage resolution of risks.
  • Lead on Engineering Integrity and architecture conformance.
  • Mentor and share knowledge with others, offer expert advice and recommendations in your areas of subject expertise, and be an advanced user of design tools. 
  • Provide technical expertise to inform contract and commercial management.  Provide input to business cases and proposals for ways to avoid costs

You will also be responsible for

People

  • Lead a small matrix team across Design and Test to ensure they are trained and directed to design and test CRE related deliveries appropriately

Cost

  • Driving efficiency and cost reduction through defining Brilliant and Simple requirements to the supplier and other BT systems

Quality

  • Ensuring rigorous and highly available solutions to underpin the highly available requirements of SDIN/ORION and our VoIP services. 

Delivery

  • Design and drive improved working processes, Operating outside of set designs and guidelines where necessary to find innovate solutions to optimise delivery of technical solution.
  • Application of Design best practise to domain, and interlock with design and delivery plans across all related systems and teams.

 

Skills required for the job

The CRE Specialist Network Designer will possess a good knowledge of voice networks including VoIP, Mobile networks and large Carrier networks. They will have a strong grasp of Switching and IP Networking, SIP signalling and DNS. 

Other specifics for the role include thorough knowledge of

  • Voice Numbering standards and call routing strategies
  • Server configuration and management 
  • Provisioning systems and associated interfaces e.g. REST API, SOAP XML
  • Titanium (ex NetNumber) TITAN platform, and the BT routing application running on it
  • Openstack private cloud platform and deployment of applications to it

You will also possess, or be in the process of developing, more general business skills 

  • Stakeholder and Vendor  Management – Ability to engage with
  • Stakeholders and Vendors at an appropriate level to ensure necessary business results can be attained.
  • Problem solving – Proven ability to solve complex problems in a controlled and systematic manner, analysing the available data to make the correct business decesions taking responsible risks when appropriate.
  • Coaching and Mentoring – Experience of coaching and mentoring others for peak performance
  • Financial Management – Understands overall cost to business for decisions made, has a good working knowledge of different types of budgets and inputs to business cases
  • Process improvement / Management – Works across teams to identify changes to processes and procedures to enable faster delivery or better business outcomes.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to bring teams together across BT to look at business issues ranging from feasibility through to issues affecting live service.

You will be a recognised expert in this field inside BT

Experience you would be expected to have

  • 3 years + experience of core voice network/platform design
  • 3 years+ experience of voice network/platform testing
  • Proven record of delivering  projects to time, cost, quality requirements
