Why this job matters

The PSOC tools development specialist leads a team of developers based in Adastral Park, Ipswich. We build software to support BT's Security Command Centre (SCC) and Physical Identity Access Management (PIAM) teams, helping them to fortify our physical security estate, including our network, colleague, customers & assets.
Our developers design, build, test, deploy and support our applications and we work closely with the people who use our software to make sure we’re building the tools and features that will give them the most benefit.

 

This role is hybrid (3 days in office) and can be based in one of the following offices: Birmingham, Manchester, Ipswich (Ipswich only applicable to existing BT employees)

What you’ll be doing

  • This is a highly technical hands-on developer role where you will be leading a team of full-stack software developers. We believe in shared code ownership, learning from one another and making the most of everyone’s skills and experience.
  • You will be expected to coach and mentor your team, ensuring best practices are ingrained in the way they work. You will be setting high technical standards and will be accountable for the design choices and technologies used in the team.
  • We use both open and closed source software; our modern applications in the team are built using Ruby on Rails backed with a Postgres database. Other older applications use the Microsoft .Net Framework and ASP or MS access for our deep legacy. 
  • You do not need to have prior experience with these, but you will need to be able to adapt your expertise to them quickly.
  • This role will involve line management responsibilities. 

 

Skills & Experience Required for the Role

Mandatory

  • Be a current software developer with up-to-date skills and experience in developing high quality, maintainable, code bases. 
  • Love to learn. You will be expected to keep up to date with relevant technologies and practices which could be good to adopt in the team. 
  • Enjoy working closely with customers in agile teams in a collaborative environment. 
  • Keen to champion automation, eg automated testing, CI/CD. 
  • Be an excellent coach who enjoys helping others be at their best. 
  • A good understanding of the complete Software Development Lifecycle.

 

Nice to have

  • Be comfortable with Unix/Linux, version control, and database technologies. 
  • Ruby on rails, Postgres, JavaScript, elastic search 
  • Microsoft .Net framework languages C# ASP SQL Server
  • Have experience leading teams; actively scoping work and driving projects forward.
