BT relies on submarine cables to form the backbone of the global transmission network delivering services and products to BT’s multinational corporate customers. 97% of BT’s international traffic is carried over submarine cables. BT also relies on submarine cables to deliver domestic services within the UK including superfast broadband meeting UK consumer and business customers expectations.
This job ensures that BT subsea cable assets are procured and operated in way that meets BT’s customers’ requirements from a marine and route engineering perspective and adhere to relevant marine safety policies that you will manage on behalf of the Subsea vertical within Specialist Platforms. You will ensure that BT’s operational and offshore liaison obligations are met, leading, by collaborating with and supporting colleagues with those responsibilities, including any contracted support
What you’ll be doing
- Creating and implementing technical solutions for the installation or repair of subsea systems, taking into account how these solutions impact systems or processes internally and/or externally.
- Overseeing the practical implementation of BT’s subsea marine strategy in line with BT’s overall strategy and customer requirements.
- Ensuring BT’s Subsea cable assets are procured in line with customer requirements in a cost-effective manner, including representing BT and performing lead roles in international consortia
- Ensuring that all marine related aspects of BT’s subsea cables are engineered to ensure operational efficiency and H&S compliance, including making key decisions on engineering and delivery.
- Ensuring that BT’s subsea cable assets are operated and maintained in a safe and cost effective manner and aligned to BT subsea policies, customer, legal and regulatory requirements.
- Identifies opportunities to improve standards of practice, continuously enhancing ways of working.
- Monitoring supplier performance and working closely with suppliers to understand the impact of developments within the subsea industry on BT
- Working flexibly across multiple projects and sites, and travel internationally, sometimes at short notice
- Supporting a 24/7 call roster (1 in 4) and work offshore (up to 30 days per year) or at remote sites.
- Mentoring and support as a technical resource for Engineering professionals and team members, helping to improve the team’s agility, abilities and processes.

Experience you'll have
- Subsea Cable Marine Technology: shallow-water and beach works planning, survey, engineering installation.
- Good knowledge of the repair and installation of subsea assets, preferably subsea cable assets.
- Direct working on subsea infrastructure type engineering projects either onshore or offshore, particularly beach landing and shore-end implementation or repair.
- Managed departmental costs when cost was under pressure.
- Managed a cross-disciplinary team to deliver a successful outcome.
- Made decisions in ambiguous situations using incomplete information or differing opinions (e.g. divided team loyalties or unclear deliverables)
- Working unsupervised yet collaboratively within a complex multi-disciplinary engineering team
- Typically, five years of working in a subsea cable environment on any of marine, civil or system engineering related activities
- Working in an international arena
- Degree or equivalent in an engineering subject
- Chartered Engineer or commitment to become one
- Member of a relevant professional organisation or equivalent. E.g. Institution of Engineering & Technology
