Network Engineer Professional

Ipswich, London or Cheltenham

Security isn't always the first thing that comes to mind when you think of BT, but when it comes to keeping everyone safely connected, We Are The Protectors. We deal with thousands of cyber-attacks every day, so that millions of people can safely go about their daily lives and run their businesses. We deliver vital work at scale, with real breadth and impact. We connect for good.

You’ve got opportunities

As a member of our network engineering team you’ll be working in a growing team that has full responsibility for the design and implementation of world-class customer focused network solutions, ranging in size from small bespoke solutions to large enterprise scale deployments.

The team is customer focused so you’ll have the opportunity to work directly with end customers, understand their requirements and design solutions that make a significant difference in protecting the society in which we live.

While the role is predominantly focused on the design and implementation of network solutions, there will also be an opportunity to employ in-depth diagnostic skills in the resolution of complex third line support issues.

You’ll have numerous opportunities to grow and develop your career, as we’re actively looking to support our team’s professional development in the transition to more software defined and cloud based approaches.

What you’ll do:

  • Contribute to the creation of high and low level network designs for complex IP networks.
  • Be hands on implementing these solutions, using different vendors’ products such as Cisco and Juniper.
  • Work directly with our customers to understand their requirements and use this to inform your solutions.
  • Work with support teams to enable management and the ongoing support of deployed solutions.
  • Provide some third line support to deployed solutions.

You’ll definitely:

  • Have experience in designing, building, and providing third-line support for complex IP networks, that are secure, scalable, resilient and give high performance.
  • Know how to create both high and low level designs.
  • Be able to communicate complex technical concepts and solutions to a range of technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Have a desire to continually update, enhance and validate own skills.

You might even:

  • Know how to use and have experience with LAN switching in small- and medium-scale data centre and enterprise environments, maybe including experience with RSTP/MSTP, LAG, MC-LAG or SPB and first-hop resilience and security protocols.
  • Have experience with and knowledge of enterprise and operator-scale routing design using protocols such as OSPF, IS-IS, BGP, LDP or RSVP.
  • Have knowledge of network design for security, potentially including firewall, IDS and IPS experience.
  • Have some experience of automation and Software Defined Networking approaches, for example Cisco DNA, and networking in the cloud such as AWS’s VPC, DirectConnect, Route53, AWS Shield. However, neither is mandatory as this is an area we as a team are looking to upskill in and would support your development in.
  • Have experience of internal and external stakeholder management and engagement
  • Have a certification in a network engineer discipline such as CISCO CCNA. Though while desirable, practical experience using specific vendors’ equipment, including Cisco and Juniper, is more important.

 What’s in it for you?

  • Career progression in BT Security and across BT with our internal development programme
  • Competitive salary
  • Location:                    Ipswich, London or Cheltenham
  • Weekly Hours:            37.5
  • Position Type:            Full Time
  • Contract:                     Permanent

Benefits

  • Discounted BT Broadband, TV & mobile packages and BT products
  • On target Bonus
  • Share options and 10% pension contribution
  • Professional development and paid for industry certifications/qualifications
  • Flexible benefits/rewards including dental insurance, healthcare, gym memberships etc.
  • Well-being support for you and your family
  • 3 days paid volunteering a year
  • Flexible and smart working (subject to business needs)
  • Due to the sensitive nature of this role you may be required to undergo DV (Developed Vetting) level Security Clearance (https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/united-kingdom-security-vetting-clearance-levels/national-security-vetting-clearance-levels). An allowance of £5k per annum may be payable monthly while you hold this DV and continue to work in a role that requires that level of security clearance. The terms of this allowance will be made available if you are successful in being recruited into this role.
