Applied Research (AR) is a large multi-disciplined ‘professional services’ engineering practice. The team is organised in key customer focused capabilities which each have sub-capability areas comprising single or multiple engineering delivery projects.

The purpose of this role is to be technically proficient in an Applied Research profession and to deliver work packages on a delivery project

Our customers depend on us to bring technical insight and industry best practices to help them progress their mission. You will bring new technologies and suggest improvements to current working practices.  


What you'll be doing:

You’ll be working on a high speed, packet processing platform. You’ll work as part of a team under with a senior developer to create bespoke solutions to customer problems.

  • Understand customer problems and work on technical solutions
  • Take ownership of planning, developing and delivering an area of the project
  • Develop high quality, performant code
  • Use automated test tools for unit, integration and system tests
  • Share knowledge both within the team and with our Special Interest Groups


Personal Skills:

  • Design and develop bespoke solutions under supervision of the team lead
  • Collaborate with customers to understand complex technical problems
  • Investigate, analyse and recommened existing software libraries and products to meet requirements
  • Participate in the code review process
  • Create test suites to verify code correctness
  • Participates in external activities related to own specialism, e.g. attending technical conferences, knowledge sharing



  • Explain and present technical areas back to the team & customers as part of knowledge sharing sessions
  • Produce technical documentation


Technical skills:


  • Qualified to degree level or with experience of technical delivery
  • Ability to take substantial personal responsibility, ownership and autonomy
  • C/C++ on Linux (CentOS 7)
  • Understanding of networking (L2-L7 including Ethernet, MPLS and VLAN)
  • Packet processing, packet capture
  • Database (Mysql/MariaDB)
  • Scripting (Bash, Python)
  • Multithreaded programming
  • Worked with web services (RESTful web services, JSON)
  • Source code management tools (Git, SVN)


  • Worked in agile development teams
  • Experience of Arista Switches and configuration
  • Understanding of encryption methodologies
  • Linux Administration and package management
  • Jenkins



  • Be able to quickly upskill on new technologies through a combination of self learning and external courses
  • Member of a professional body appropriate to area of specialism.
  • Security Clearance: A DV level of National Security Vetting will be required for this role. You will have existing clearence or be eligible for security clearence.

An allowance of £5k per annum may be payable monthly while you hold this DV and continue to work in a role that requires that level of security clearance. The terms of this allowance will be made available if you are successful in being recruited into this role.
