The in-house lawyer's task is to protect and represent the company's interests in strategic, commercial and dispute matters. You will be legal generalist but may specialise in a particular field (contracting, public procurement, litigation, data protection, etc.) and ensures together with other team members that we comply with policies, laws and regulations. This specific role is mainly to support our international institutions and government business but also commercial contracting and includes all related aspects. Some knowledge of employment law or openness to develop such knowlegde by learning on the job is a certainly a plus. The lawyer accompanies the company's ongoing projects and advises management and operational departments on risks, drawing on his/her sound legal knowledge. You will advise businesses to ensure that they act in a legally compliant manner and in support of BT's strategy.

These are the main activities we will ask you to support (if you do not have the experience in all area’s show us your willingness to learn and develop):

 

Drafting and follow-up of contracts and commercial documents:


o    Drafting or assisting in the drafting of contracts for customers and/or suppliers, private or public partners of the company. Specific focus for this role are agreements and RFP processes in the framework of international government organisations (e.g. European or other International Institutions) 
o    Providing support to operational teams in various forms: responding to calls for tender, drafting framework agreements or negotiated procedures, general conditions of sale, partnership contracts, major international contracting including outsourcing contracts etc.
o    Drafting and updating a database of model contracts.
o    Negotiating and drafting contracts related to data protection (DPA).

 

Pre-litigation and litigation management :


o    Responding to litigation letters and proposing amicable solutions for certain cases
o    Managing and investigating cases: implementing and carrying out procedures for formal notice, legal summonses, etc.
o    Contacting lawyers in the context of legal proceedings.
o    Ensure that potential disputes are resolved.

 

Advice:


o    Support to the entire organisation on wide range of matters
o    Support in regulatory matters, data protection, labour law and other legal areas.

 

 Setting up and monitoring a legal watch (horizon scanning):


o    To ensure a permanent legal watch on the company's activities and its compliance with the legal framework by following the evolution of national, European and sometimes international regulations (as well as case law in exceptional cases).
o    Call on online sources including from external expert firms to provide answers on specialised subjects (e.g. intellectual property, international law, litigation, etc.) and track evolution thereof.
o    Responsible for international projects. 
 


Pragmatic and to the point advice to operational teams:


o    Providing information and advice within the company, particularly to operational teams and general management on legal issues relating to projects (commercial law, labour law, competition law etc.) in an easy to understand and consize manner.
o    Drafting legal information notes and recommendations for the company’s operational teams in order to bring the company into compliance with the legislation in force or to anticipate regulatory changes.
o    Train client-facing teams to provide legal responses to clients. 
o    Designing and conducting training on legal issues related to the company’s activities (creating awareness).


Technical skills


o    Good understanding and ability to correctly interpret legislation, regulations and case law and translate this to business relevant consize, clear and to the point advice.
o    Knowledge of Belgian/European regulations.
o    Very good use of Internet tools and legal databases, particularly as a monitoring and research tool
o    Fluency in English and if possible Dutch and/or French.

o    Enthousiasm and be able to guide and support teams 
o    Be a pragmantic, supportive lawyer that is able to balance different interests and suggest ways forward for the business
o    Analytical, synthesizing and drafting skills to analyze contract legal texts, write notes and reports
o    Curiosity and taste for investigation and monitoring
o    Communication, presentation and negociation skills to interact with all operational teams from all levels including customers and suppliers
o    Make legal rules understandable and comprehensible to non-lawyers and explain the importance of certain procedures
o    Proven experience in argumentation and conviction to be able to examine files, impose the application of regulations and negotiate contractual clauses
o    Responsiveness and ability to deal with a variety of subjects in parallel


Profile and Experience


5-10 years of higher education (law master's degree) possibly supplemented by experiences or education giving access to specialist area’s of law such as Data Protection, Outsourcing, ICT contracting or other specialist area’s.
