As a Contract Accountant supporting the Devolved Nations within the UK S&C Public Sector business, this role plays a pivotal part in ensuring financial integrity and performance across a diverse portfolio, with a particular focus on the high-profile SWAN contract. Acting as a key business partner to both the SWAN operational team and the Scotland Sales team, the role provides essential financial insight and guidance that underpins strategic decision-making and operational success. Working closely with the Public Sector Senior Finance Manager, this position is central to maintaining strong financial governance and delivering accurate, actionable reporting.

 

This role is critical in holding business leaders accountable for achieving their sales and profit targets, using financial data to drive performance and productivity. By supporting the customer-facing sales channel, the Contract Accountant ensures alignment with financial goals that contribute to the success of CPS, the wider business, and BT as a whole. It’s a role that not only supports but actively shapes the financial direction of key public sector contracts, making a tangible impact on both customer outcomes and business performance.

 

This role can be based in Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Manchester or London. Working three days a week in office and two days a week working from home. 

What you’ll be doing

  • To ensure financial control on the SWAN contract and other assigned Devolved Nations contracts
  • Work closely with the Senior Finance Manager of Public Sector
  • Support unit Sales Directors and their teams in all aspects of finance 
  • Produce Monthly reporting packs for SWAN and other Devolved Nations contracts including CGRs and monthly operational reviews
  • Improve the impact, and understanding, of financial reporting on performance
  • Forecast Outlook and MTP Developing and own forward forecasting taking into account WIP, New Deals, Customer insight on Losses, Churn etc
  • Forecast outlook of new site roll out, working closely with project management
  • Review performance versus bid and keep all parties informed to ensure control of roll out
  • Detailed understanding of accounting treatment and ensuring accruals, rev recognition etc are accurate and correct
  • Provide broader product support across the business
  • Driving Cost Transformation agenda and following through to P&L – with particular attention to costs at bid and Openreach costs on roll out
  • Revenue Assurance ensuring all revenue is correctly reported
  • Balance sheet reporting and management
  • Debt collection and resolve customer specific billing issues (value channel specifically)
  • Input into the overall business’ cash position
  • To provide FP&A to the business
  • To provide commercial insight and controls around change controls
  • Lead, support external engagement i.e. with customers CFO/ Finance lead
  • Own any judgement call made on a contract in terms of recognition of cost or revenue in line with the appropriate accounting standards 

You'll have the following skills and experience

  • Financial Analysis: Oversees and reviews the financial and operational analysis for the business.
  • High level of attention to detail
  • Provides in-depth commentary that reflects understanding of wider operating environment
  • Forecasting, Planning and Budgeting: Oversees and reviews forecast/budget at detailed level, demonstrating an understanding of their inter-relationship.
  • Provides detailed feedback and insight to the business on its financial performance.
  • Commercial acumen to drive for the right outcome while being risk aware
  • Growth mindset and ability to think differently to solve problems and come up with new ways of working
  • Ability to build strong relationships across the business while ensuring accountable for business performance
  • Qualified Accountant (CIMA, ACA, ACCA etc)
