About this role


This is a hybrid role and can be based in Ipswich and Bristol.


The transformation of our working practices to include automation in all aspects of our business is key to our ability to respond and succeed.  This role requires you to bring your DevOps skills and experience to deliver pipelines and automation designed to take code and configuration through stages of test and validation into production.  You will be working with colleagues to work towards a zero touch approach from artefact delivery to deployment, operation and ultimately decommissioning.  Our customers and stakeholders rely on us to keep up with the pace of change across the mobile industry.  Our business relies on us to keep up with the rate of delivery from our suppliers.  Our shareholders rely on us to continually improve our ability to deliver business value quickly, effectively and accurately.  This role will put you at the heart of delivering on the future strategy of our business.

You will bring knowledge and experience of continuous integration, continuous testing, continuous delivery and continuous deployment.  You will be working with others to identify the best approaches and tools available, delivering technical designs and implementations to stakeholders and colleagues.  You will be working with suppliers to get the best out of tools and technologies while also looking for new and innovative ways of delivering higher value.  You will help bring culture change through an ‘Automation first’ approach.



You'll have the following responsibilities:


  • Creates and implements technical solutions for a domain or cross domains / portfolios of work within a specific technology area autonomously, understanding how solutions impact systems internally and/or externally and assessing impact of change.

  • Provides technical quality assurance over work of other engineers through matrix team structure.

  • Provides sound technical expertise to consult on significant component(s) of a technical solution within a specific domain or cross domain.

  • Identifies opportunities to improve standards of practice within a project, continuously enhancing ways of working.

  • Delivers resolutions to problems that tend to be complex, cross-domain or of high impact to customers.



You'll have the following skills & experience:


Must have:

  • Be an experienced software developer with a solid understanding of the importance of test driven development, shared code ownership, pairing, agile principles, and the management of technical debt.

  • Extensive experience developing and supporting CI/CD Pipelines

  • Good understanding of automated testing

  • Experience working with traditional operations teams and integrating them into a DevOps culture

  • Experience using GIT and Nexus essential – including a good understanding of how we can treat all artefacts as code (config, infrastructure, etc.)

  • Ability to apply knowledge/skills to a range of standard and non-standard activities 

  • Communicating effectively with customers, suppliers and other team members – understanding of own communication style and how to adapt information and messages to audience

  • Advocating and applying technology where it has not been used previously 

  • Ability to work in a team and mentor team mate where requires


Bonus to have:

  • Understanding of Python / C / Java or any similar languages

  • Technical background in mobile networks- highly desirable

  • Experience troubleshooting and integrating systems
