The Network Engineering Professional supports the delivery of engineering activities that contributes client technical requirements, deploying optimal networking and connectivity solutions that enable clients and the enterprise to achieve their operational and business goals.
Our job is to identify and deal with any problems before they impact service where possible. Where this is not possible, we react to failures that do occur, ensuring we communicate to our customers and stakeholders quickly, accurately, and effectively, as well as ensuring we get service restored for our customers in the most efficient manner possible. For Ethernet, MEAS and private circuit customers (e.g., large businesses, mobile network providers, and other telecoms operators) we carry out diagnostic and repair activities on these specialist services. We do all of this to ensure our customers get a brilliant service experience today and in the future.
Most of the Network Operations team carry out the day-to-day operational activities, working shifts, around the clock, in our state-of-the-art operations centre in Adastral Park. We work closely with other teams, including field engineers, BT’s customer facing units as well as other Network Services teams (such as design, technical services, etc.) and with our key external suppliers and equipment providers. As technology advances, the teams within Network Operations are everchanging and ever-growing in order to facilitate for any growing demands on our network.
What you’ll be doing
- You support the production of Initial Incident Report (IIR) to provide an early view of incident timeline and learning observations. Assist with any follow up actions required.
- You keep customer informed by providing timely and quality updates (system notes and KCIs) and take ownership: you plan next steps to resolve and own until completion.
- You champion and role model best practice in regards to fault handling and communications both internally and externally whilst controlling the work stack/queues.
- You ensure that customer impact (and potential risk) is known and understood for all network issues.
- Proactively utilise and monitor appropriate OSS (Operational Support System) to highlight, diagnose and resolve service/platform issues.
Skills you'll need
- Evidence of working with Linux, Compute with the intention of gaining expert understanding of Linux environments running Openstack including critical Nova, Swift, Cinder, Neutron, Horizon, Keystone, Glance services and how they interact with infra and tenants.
- History working with IP Routing & Switching platforms such as 21CN or IPP. Intention of gaining expert knowledge on software defined networks (Juniper SDN).
- Working knowledge of storage solutions.
- Working knowledge of private cloud, and virtulisation technologies (preferably KVM)
- Scripting (Bash, Python, Perl, YAML)
- Experience with containersation technologies (Docker and Kubernetes)
- Experience with storage technologies (Block/Object).
- Use of GIT Repository
- Software Defined Networks
- Experience with logging tools such as ELK, Logstash, Kibana
