Why this role matters
An exciting opportunity exists to join the synchronization team which is part of specialist platforms. This is to manage existing timing capabilities used in BT’s fixed and mobile networks and work on cutting edge technology that will form the foundation of BT’s timing infrastructure for many years to come. The purpose of this role is to:
• Support the management of the whole life technology cycle of the in-life platforms that underpin many billions of pounds of service platform revenue. This includes design, test, delivery, security, and increasingly important TSA aspects.
• Design, develop and test the timing technology that will form a key part of the BT Synchronisation infrastructure, which will help to build and simplify the network estate.
• Secure the timing estate, by focusing on incorporating security principles to various timing platforms within the infrastructure.
This role is based in Ipswich.
Our hybrid working model means you are expected to be in the office 3 days per week.
You'll have the following responsibilities
• Accountable within a small team for the design, operation, and management of various Synchronisation Platforms (both UK and international) and the timing and synchronisation aspects of service platforms including Mobile, Data, Voice, Complex Gateways, etc.
• Responsible for supporting the design, testing, and delivery of the strategic BT Sync Platform, which encompasses UK and international infrastructure.
• Responsible for conducting hands-on testing in a specialist testing environment, including firmware upgrades and proof of concept validations.
• Drives improvements via platform upgrades to reduce the complexity of infrastructure, whilst ensuring service and demand requirements are proactively met using simplified solutions.
• Support the infrastructure evolution and the technical strategy.
• Responsible for security, which is a fundamental aspect of the design process (secure by design). Focus on embedding security into the platform from the very beginning, ensuring that potential vulnerabilities are addressed as part of the core functionality.
• Application of DevOps principles to network operations where automation and continuous integration or deployment are applied to manage and operate the network infrastructure.
• In-life customer experience and health of the platform, including platform security, service and platform related deliverables and overall platform sustainability, testing and any other work on or affecting the platform and its services.
You'll have the following skills and experience
Skills
• An understanding of both timing platforms and the services / systems which interact with it as consumers or providers. Knowledge of the appropriate best practice for different aspects of the platform and introduction process.
• Knowledge of synchronisation technology. This includes various technologies and protocols (such as PTP, SyncE, NTP) that aid towards synchronisation of various elements within a network.
• An understanding of key technologies. This includes Mobile networks, Ethernet and Fibre based infrastructure, NetDevOps etc.
• Strong communication skills - Engage with and present to colleagues and senior managers across platform, and strategic vendors and use these skills to support the general commercial operations of the platform.
• Hands on experience – Actively involved in designing, configuring and testing technologies (in test and live environments).
Experience
• Experience in the operation and maintenance of an infrastructure/ platforms/ technology – Mandatory
• Hands-on experience in testing various technologies and validating proof of concepts – Mandatory
• Experience with technologies such as Ethernet, Packet IP, Optical communication, fibre-based infrastructure, etc – Preferred
• Synchronisation & Timing experience – Preferred
