Strategic nature of role

 

• Purpose of role is to create value through the exploitation of technology for network security design across complex multiple platform and/or technology areas, or high impact, risk and value network security platforms and/or customer solutions.

• Delivers work that is typically bespoke, complex, high impact and high value.

• Provides technical expertise and consultancy on both technical issues and approach, to overall design, on a number of projects concurrently – responsible for guiding technical decisions for a wide range of projects outside of areas of personal involvement on a day to day basis.

• Pushes technical boundaries and creates new business-wide opportunities.

• Identifies strategic technology and process change opportunities which will deliver long term benefits, and then drives activity to implement the change.

• Provides industry leadership on cutting edge technology. Consulting and advising senior stakeholders, internally and in a multi-vendor environment, on high profile customer solutions. Makes authoritative recommendations to Director level.

• Provides technical thought leadership in areas of significant impact to business revenue or cost through large customer deals and/or platform integration, particularly on bespoke complex business problems that are business wide and require a breadth of technology expertise.

• Possesses extensive industry knowledge and influences industry or vendor strategy, recognised as experienced in the field outside of BT. 

 


Key Accountibilities / Decisions held

 

• Provides technical concurrence and sign off for high profile and/or critical security device non operational changes on major BT core platforms and/or customer bids; accountable for managing technical risk for major platforms.

• Provides consultancy on network security designs for multiple platforms and/or solutions.

• Develops design patterns across multiple domains.

• Responsible for establishing design best practice within a unit.

• Responsible for estimating the time and type of resource needed to support deliverables for complex, high impact and high value projects.

• Delivers Right First Time solutions.

• Produce security designs, HLD/LLD documentation and other technical solutions

• Develop proof of concept designs and technical configuration guidelines for security products

• Proposes technical strategy to security platforms and/or customer solutions factoring in high impact and high risk as appropriate.

• Drives efficiency and scalability through the re-use of network security designs and accountable for the design whilst it is deployed across the overall network security platform and/or customer solution.

• Potentially leads a large matrix team (virtual) and is accountable for complex network development using innovative approaches to design (including cross-portfolio solutions). Leverages technical resource/s as required to deliver the solution.

• Decides on design scope and design to leading edge high impact and high risk network security platforms and/or customer solutions

• Decides on the time and type of resource needed to support deliverables for complex, high impact and high value projects.

• Decides on network models for design testing.

• Decides how to re-use network designs.

• Decides on implementation approaches of technology related transformation activity. 

 


Revenue /Scope /Scale of role

 

• May lead technical design output from level 1, 2, 3, or 4 designers and/or third party resources.

• May lead a large matrix team of technical experts.

• Provides strong influence on senior stakeholders in terms of technical direction of platforms, which will influence commercial direction.

• Likely to lead on significant vendor selection for one or two domains. 

 


Stakeholder/ Communication skills

 

• Able to deliver significant stakeholder influence to resolve problems. Expected to give technical guidance to others to help resolve issues outside of the domain of the role.

• Provides thought leadership to senior internal stakeholders and customers regarding the overall future platform and/or customer solutions.

• Acts as a point of contact for technical expertise to advise senior stakeholders, internal and external. 

 


Business expertise /Commercial impact

 

• Expert user of design tools; seeks opportunities to develop new design tools for BT, and for external adoption.

• Makes authoritative recommendations on design tools and processes for network platforms and/or customer solutions, where appropriate.

• Able to solve problems typically specific to leading edge high impact and high risk network platforms and/or customer solutions.

• Impact of decisions are specific to the design strategy and/or direction for leading edge high risk and high impact network platforms and/or customer solution.

• Evidence of successful transformation measures – e.g. HLD/LLD.

• Mentors and share knowledge with others.

• Positive revenue measures for P&SD roles.

• Efficient cycle time
