The Planning, Risk & Controls Specialist is vital for the successful execution of our transformation programmes. This role ensures robust planning, proactive risk management, and effective controls across the portfolio. By maintaining accurate and aligned integrated programme plans, actively managing risks and dependencies, and validating delivery readiness through structured and data-driven planning assurance reviews, the specialist provides essential visibility and control of delivery progress reporting. The role enables informed decision-making, timely escalation of critical delivery interventions, and supports the delivery of projects on time and within tolerances, driving operational excellence and strategic alignment of delivery activity. The specialist will adapt to evolving business needs, ensuring that the programme and its Initiatives continue to benefit from robust planning and risk mitigation strategies
What you’ll be doing
- Lead the development and maintenance of a comprehensive, integrated programme plan using advanced project management and predictive analytics tools (e.g., Jira), ensuring accurate timelines, dependencies, key milestones.
- Develop and implement a proactive risk management framework utilising quantitative and qualitative analysis (e.g. Monte Carlo simulations) to identify and mitigate portfolio-wide risks and dependencies.
- Manage a robust RAID log with clear escalation procedures for high-impact risks, ensuring consistent application of the risk framework.
- Proactively escalate critical risks to senior stakeholders, provide clear impact assessments, actions, contingency plans and data-driven insights.
- Partner with delivery teams to foster a proactive risk management culture and implement effective mitigation strategies.
- Ensure accurate and integrated planning and risk data across all reporting tools and dashboards, leveraging data automation to improve quality and streamline processes.
- Provide strategic planning and risk insights to support data-driven decision-making at governance forums using advanced data visualisation.
- Lead responses to internal/external audits, ensuring compliance and proactively identifying areas for improvement and implementing corrective actions.
- Continuously evaluate and refine planning and risk management practices, leveraging industry best practices and emerging technologies.
Skills and Experience
- Advanced proficiency in project planning and scheduling tools (e.g., MS Project, Jira, Smartsheet).
- Deep understanding of risk management frameworks and methodologies (e.g., COSO, ISO 31000).
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify patterns and trends in risk data.
- Transformation skillset, with the ability to implement frameworks and processes in an evolving portfolio environment.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills, capable of tailoring information to diverse audiences (technical and non-technical).
- Proven ability to lead and deliver complex planning and risk management projects, managing multiple stakeholders and competing priorities.
- Expertise in developing and implementing robust control frameworks, ensuring compliance with governance standards.
- Advanced knowledge of financial modelling and forecasting techniques, to support resource allocation and budget management.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, providing guidance and mentorship to junior colleagues, fostering a high-performing team culture.
Experience you would be expected to have
- Significant experience in leading and delivering complex planning and risk management projects within large-scale transformation programmes.
- Demonstrated success in developing and implementing robust risk management frameworks, mitigating significant risks and preventing project failures.
- Experience in developing and implementing effective control frameworks, ensuring compliance with governance standards and regulatory requirements.
- Experience working with senior stakeholders, effectively communicating complex information and influencing decision-making.
- Proven ability to adapt planning and risk management methodologies to different project contexts and organisational requirements.
