About this role


The Corporate Strategy and Development team is a central team with a remit across the whole business.  Its role is to focus on the future, helping the company to identify opportunities, risks and challenges so that BT plc wins in the markets in which it operates.  It provides thought leadership and solutions to enable profitable revenue growth, and shareholder return.  It does this through a focus on customers and competitors, enabling it to design winning strategies for our networks, products and brands.


The Corporate Strategy and Development team has a critical role to play as we continue to shape and deliver BT’s long-term strategy, and strengthen the alignment of our units around a single strategy. In a rapidly changing environment, it is critical that we take a more integrated approach to how we drive value out of our assets and transform our business. This integrated strategy will bring together commercial and business strategies and support long term growth and profitability. 


This role will focus on answering a wide range of big strategic questions to design the group’s long-term strategy as well as assessing potential mergers and acquisitions strategies. The projects you will work on should provide an objective and independent view whilst engaging a multi-functional working team of experts across the business. You will be expected to develop innovative recommendations and solid business cases for decision and implementation to ensure BT continues to be a profitable, innovative, customer focused organisation.


You will be working in a fun, agile and fast-paced environment and you will be at the centre of key decision making, working directly with BT’s senior executives with enterprise wide accountability.


You'll have the following responsibilities


  • Contributing to designing the group’s strategy and articulating the key priorities for the group
  • Taking ownership to resolve key strategic questions including potential partnership and M&A opportunities end to end on the workstream level. Key tasks include: breaking down a key question and framing the approach to investigate it, identifying strategic options to resolve the issue, assessing the issue through in-depth quantitative and qualitative analyses, developing recommendations and associated investment / business cases.
  • Driving collaboration with relevant CFUs through resolution of strategic questions, to ensure full ownership and appropriation from key stakeholders
  • Developing new business cases across BT in collaboration with the CFU’s to validate assumptions, while understanding where there will be tension and drive buy-in and collaboration with relevant CFUs. 
  • Facilitating resolution development of strategic questions and ensure engagement and ownership from key stakeholders on a working level  generation and sales conversion 


You'll have the following skills & experience


  • Strategy experience and interest either in a corporate strategy environment or a consulting firm
  • Relevant industry experience i.e. TMT is preferred but not required
  • Strategic thinking: High level understanding of the strategy consulting approach, including understanding of hypothesis testing, unit economics and profitability, Comfortable with ambiguity and able to define and manage requirements effectively to deliver in a timely manner, insights and results driven, with a challenging and fact-based mindset and able to frame and breakdown complex business problems across markets and segments, highly analytical with experience working with complex data sets and financial modelling.
  • Communication - Ability to create inspiring messages, considering different perspectives and delivering simple communications, awareness of audience needs and ability to tailor your style accordingly, strong presentation skills, capable of articulating complex ideas with authority and making the case for change, ability to synthesise issues and get to the “so what?”
  • People -  Ability to independently build successful collaboration relationships with working leads from different business units across the Group, strong team player with the ability to perform under pressure, ability to help create a high performing culture through knowledge sharing and collaboration.
