Why this role matters

This role is essential in maintaining a sufficiently strong control environment with processes in place to prevent errors and to maintain an audit trail to ensure that the financial data we use is correct. This role also ensures that we actively identify emerging and enduring risks to our control environment and financial position so we can react to the risks facing Openreach quickly and effectively.

Openreach’s Statutory Finance team performs a key role in developing and maintaining the controls in line with group guidance, reports on the identified risks from a finance perspective and assists in delivering the external audit throughout the year.

What you'll be doing

  • Responsible for facilitating the external audit process, including arranging and attending walkthroughs, monitoring and assisting in delivery of the audit deliverables to external auditors, and helping to resolve any queries that our external auditors have as part of the annual process.
  • Responsible for development of financial controls, ensuring controls owners comply with evidencing, reporting and assurance requirements and any remediation required where deficiencies are identified.
  • Provide a quarterly presentation to senior management including BT Group CFO, Openreach CFO on the status of Openreach financial controls and ongoing projects.
  • Assist in completion of all VAT checklists for new revenue codes submitted to group.
  • Act as the main point of contact for Openreach regarding VAT queries.
  • Responsible for updating ARTEMIS (BT risk management system) and collaborating with the other Openreach Risk leads in preparation for the quarterly ARC meeting.
  • Lead on the preparation of the Openreach Limited financial statements and internal audit.
  • Be responsible for the delivery of the annual asset verification and life review accounting papers.
  • Assist in preparing and updating the Openreach accounting papers; and carry on other ad-hoc work to support the central finance team.

The skills you'll need

  • Qualified Accountant (ACA/ACCA/CIMA or equivalent).
  • Experience of the external audit process either as an auditor or from being audited.
  • Excellent communicator and confident in being involved in conversations that you may not be the subject expert in.
  • Pragmatic team player, adept at holding others to account through a challenging and supportive leadership style, whilst consistently delivering on their own commitments.
  • An understanding or willingness to learn about the importance of having a strong control environment while maintaining an audit trail.
  • Leads, champions and manages conflicting priorities with ownership of successful delivery of key financial deliverables.
